Margate was a town in St. Johns County, Florida, United States on the Yucatán Peninsula. It is now part of the City of Margate and is located at (32.533333,-87.322222). The town was founded in 1892 by Captain Corinne Dyer as an agricultural community on the peninsula's east side, about 8 miles due south of present-day Jacksonville. In 1902, Margate joined Jacksonville as a city and renamed it after its original founders, margates being derived from the word "marsh" or "bay." A sewage plant was constructed in 1917 to cope with increased population and pollution caused by shipping activity on the Everglades coastline; however, this plant ceased operation in 1922 because of financial difficulties. The post office served Margate until 1951; before that it was part of Jacksonville. The first school opened in 1893; today there are six schools serving Margate: two elementary schools (grades K-6), one middle school (7-12), one high school (13-18), one college preparatory program (19-24), and one special needs program (25-29). The community had 7 churches by 1897 and 20 businesses by 1923.
