Margate, Florida is home to a rich history of optical accessory companies. The city was founded in 1887 by J.P. Morgan and his partners as the Bay City Optical Shop, which became the world's first optical store when it opened on West Bay Street. In 1925, Margate joined forces with nearby Fort Myers to form the Fort Myers Optical Company. The company operated until 1968, when it merged with nearby Lee's Summit Optical Company to become Lee's Summit Optical Corporation. In 1978, Lee's Summit merged with Gulf States Broadcasting Corporation to create Gulf Coast Broadcasting Corporation. On July 2, 1984, Gulf Coast Broadcasting Corporation merged with Tampa-based WFTS-TV (NBC) to form Today Television Incorporated. Today is the primary broadcaster for Margate and much of central Florida through its affiliate stations WWJ-TV (CBS), WTSP-TV (NBC), and KFVS-TV (CW). Since its inception in 1887, Bay City Optical Shop has been one of Margate's most important businesses. Not only did it provide customers with high quality optical products at competitive prices but also served as an important center for local education by teaching students how to use optical equipment properly. The shop also played a significant role in developing Margate into a tourist destination by providing visitors with information about local attractions and businesses as well as sells items related to optics such as lenses and telescopes. In 1925, Fort Myers Optical Company was formed when two major opticians merged together - The American OPTICAL COMPANY OF FORT MYERS AND MARYLAND INC., founded in 1902 by Elisha Gray and George Fenton Brownell; and THE FLORIDA OPTICAL CO., LTD., founded in 1923 by Drs John Leland Weinreb and Julius Rosenwaldt from Philadelphia Pennsylvania). Work on forming this company began soon after they realized that they were both short of employees due to World War I enlistments! Together they designed new optics products that would be popularized throughout the 1920s including monoculars/converters/telescopes/binoculars etc.). After successfully launching their business under this name in 1925 they continued expanding their product line until eventually becoming one of America’s leading optical stores chain executives cited said "When you go into any other optician today you can find many similar products but we pioneered them". They closed their doors in 1968 due primarily to competition from Woolworth’s who had opened up next door at 327 West Bay Street which made buying optic supplies difficult if not impossible without going outside of town! It wasn't until 1978 when Lee's SummitOptical Corp merged with Gulf States Broadcasting Corpto create Gulf Coast Broadcasting Corp that Margate really started getting some serious attention for being home to one of America’s premiere television broadcasters for over thirty years now! Margate is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,017 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by English settlers in 1838 and named after Margate in Kent, England. In 1851, the name was changed to Margate Landing due to an increase in ship traffic on the TCP Railroad from Jacksonville to Tampa Bay. The town's first post office opened in 1855. In 1907, residents of nearby Stonington voted to merge with Margate and become one municipality; this merger was accomplished without a municipal election. That year also saw the opening of the new State Highway 190 (SR 190), which connected Margate with Kissimmee and Sanford. The post office closed on January 1, 1957; however, it reopened on February 14 that year as part of a reopening campaign that began by then-Mayor Willard Withers III. On July 4th of that year Hurricane Agnes struck mainland Florida; damage done to homes and businesses led to a resurgence in mail order services through catalog companies such as Sears & Roebuck and JCPenney dealers across southern Florida during the early 1960s when delivery could be made directly from addresses rather than being sent via truck or train from Jacksonville or Tampa Bay stations. On November 15th 1967 local leaders announced plans for a new shopping mall adjacent to Interstate 4 Everglades Boulevard that would include two dozen stores including Sears & Roebuck as well as Kmart and JCPenney along with restaurants including Red Lobster and Olive Garden among others.. The proposal met opposition from residents who wanted their neighborhoods preserved while retail development took place within walking distance of their homes Instead of driving down I-4 for hours just to get there.. In an effort to placate those who objected Mayor Withers ordered construction not begin until all issues had been resolved.. Construction finally commenced on October 31st 1968 but continued into 1969 due to objections by some residents who felt they had been taken advantage of during what they saw as Developer monopoly ..[2] The project ultimately failed when developer David Printz pulled out after only seven months because he could not find enough financing

Margate, Florida is a town located on the banks of the St. Johns River in Lee County, Florida. The population was 2,000 at the 2000 census. It was founded by European immigrants in 1881 as a citrus and sugar cane plantation community named Monroe. The sugarcane industry stopped production in the early 1920s, but Margate continued to grow because of its attractive location on Jacksonville's test run for an electric streetcar line. When that project failed, Margate became known as "the city of trees." The first business opened in Margate was a grocery store in 1881. By 1895, there were seven businesses open including three restaurants and two breweries. In 1912, Margate had its first post office and by 1915 there were four banks with $10,000 in assets each. The arrival of World War I led to increased agricultural production which added more jobs to the community; however, during Prohibition Margate experienced some economic difficulties due to prohibitionist efforts to quench thirsty thirsts among alcoholics. Afterward, many businesses closed or moved out of Margate due to competition from Jacksonville or other large cities acrossFlorida such as Tampa Bay Area In 1949-1950 when countywide 1% sales tax increase went into effect ( THEN THE REAL DEAL ) localities passed referendumsPleadng no vote but received millions from state governmentIncluding a share for new road construction etc.......two thirds yes with only one third against ...... residents voted yes on adding another penny per $100 worth of personal property value ................. meaning if you own real estate worth less than this then your taxes will go up not down ....... so now over time most people have seen their property values increase while their overall tax bill has stayed essentially the same even though they live elsewhere In 1990 referendum voterspassed millage 3 increasing funding for schools twenty five percent
Margate is a town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name "Margate" was given to the town by developer James B. O'Leary for his Margate Resort and Marina on Orange Beach Boulevard adjacent to Margate Pier. The resort opened in 1919 and closed in 1984. It was reopening as a community in 1996 when it became one of two communities that were merged into Jacksonville after being separate since 1918 when Margate was an unincorporated community within Lee County. In 2002, Margate's first school opened, which served students from kindergarten through eighth grade. In 2010, the town added its second high school, which serves ninth through twelfth grades.
