Margate, Florida is a small town located in Bay County, Florida. The population was 4,567 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from the Danish word "Margate," meaning "place where ships are moored." The first Europeans to visit Margate were Portuguese in 1518 and Spanish in 1519. In 1827, US Senator James K. Polk sent an expedition to explore the Tampa Bay area and determine whether there was any land accessible by sea that could be used for military purposes. The expedition's captain, John A. MacNary, landed at Margate on July 12 and explored the bay before returning to Tampa on July 20. In 1829, another US senator, Martin Litton (D-Florida), visited Margate with his wife Julia Lawless Swayne and their daughter Caroline Noland Swayne. He purchased some land around the bay for $2 per acre from local farmers and began trading goods with Indians along what is now State Road 24A (now Interstate 434). After selling most of his land in 1830 to other settlers, Litton built a home which still stands today on Main Street in Margate – known as "the Litton House." The town of Margate grew rapidly during antebellum times because it was a convenient location for shipping supplies and items needed forexport such as cotton and sugar cane into South America or Europe. During this time many businesses were established including a bank (1830), insurance company (1836), grocery store (1838), cotton gin (1839), flour mill ( 1840) and more importantly sawmill( 1841). By 1860 nearly all of the businesses had closed down due to competition from larger towns within walking distance such as St Petersburg or Clearwater. However some notable buildings that remain include: American Legion Post #931 building which became Fire Station No 1 in 1959; United States Post Office Building which serves as part of community center; Presbyterian Church building which served as school house until 1978; First National Bank Building which currently houses apartments; Methodist Episcopal Church building which currently serves as library/venue; School District 2 Library/Recreation Center building also serving as community center; General Store/Grocery store frontage now occupied by restaurant & bar complex called 'Crescent City'. 1st Baptist Church left behind two vestibules that still stand today - one containing artesian well water used by residents for irrigation purposes while another contains storage tanks used later when water usage increased from Nowata Lake water supply- both are open to visitors during daylight hours only! It should be noted that these structures have been extensively vandalized over time so no accurate information can be provided about their condition today however they appear to have significant damage once upon initial inspection! 2nd Baptist Church burned down circa 1960 but has since been replaced byarsonic church on opposite side of main street- both churches remain active though not open to public

Margate began as an agricultural village founded in 1892 by John L. Sweeny and his wife Anna McNamara Sweeny on land that now includes much of what is today downtown Margate. At its peak, Margate had about 100 residents and five stores. The Village went out of business in 1924 after cotton prices plummeted due to global shortages caused by World War I; however, some residents rebuilt it around 1960s when yards were re-vegetated with palms and other plants typical in coastal towns during those years. Wofford bought 640 acres adjacent to present day downtown Margata for $2 per acre from local farmer Samuel Jourdan who had leased land from Captain John Tilton specifying that no buildings should be erected on it without prior written consent from both parties involved . Upon arrival he found himself immediately surrounded by Native Americans who were already gathering fresh fruit trees, harvesting cornmeal crop fields, making baskets out of palm fronds etc., all activities considered taboo under Creek Indian law at that time After visiting many places along this stretch including Anasazi ruins just northeast across SR 527 off US 1A/SR 27 near Stonington Island phosphate mine he decided upon establishing a tavern called The Gilded Cage which opened its doors October 15th 1926 ..... exterior view looking west towards Asbury Park.. circa 1926

The town began as part of Indian Harbour Plantation on what is now known as East Margate Boulevard. On December 12, 1784, Captain John Smith anchored his ship "Margate" off the coast of Margate Peninsula after an unsuccessful attempt to find a passage to Table Rock (now Cocoa Beach). In 1825,Captain John Stroud landed at Margate with his party of four men after being stranded on Cape Canaveral Bay while exploring south Florida. The first recorded settler in Margate was Mrs. James Ellison who arrived with her husband George in 1827 aboard the brigantine "Eagle". She built a cabin which still stands today on Government Street near where present day State Road 5 intersects East Margate Boulevard. In 1830-31 Lt.-Governor Daniel Webster sent two parties of soldiers under Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Bogue to investigate reports that pirates were operating along theFlorida Gulf Coast. One group numbering forty-eight men consisting of twenty Americans and twenty British officers and seamen marched from Fort Moultrie down Spanish Key Trail named for Captain Alonso de Torres y Valdez who had been killed during expedition against piracy off Tampa Bay six months earlier; they encountered no opposition but did lose two cannons and some equipment when they reached Pensacola Bayou approximately five miles from present day mainland Florida beach frontage east of mile marker 21st on US Highway 1A (the modern Overseas Highway) about three miles west of current day intersectionState Road 434/SR 234 (the old Sunrise Highway) . After returning home without encountering any pirates or finding anything useful he recommended that no more such expeditions be made until better vessels could be acquired which never happened .
