Margate, Florida is a city located in the state of Florida. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Margate's history dates back to 1892 when it was founded as a small town in what is now Hillsborough County by Captain John Treadway and his wife Anna Jarvis. The town grew rapidly due to its location on an peninsula between two bodies of water - being close to both Tampa and Jacksonville - and its position as a naval air station between World War I and II. In 1958, during the height of days for Maritimes travel, Margate became one of only two Canadian cities (the other being Halifax) that accepted American tourists with overnight stays instead of returning home Sunday night like most other urban centres within Canada. The name of Margate comes from the Danish word "mark", meaning an island or headland. After a brief stay as part of West Palm Beach County, Margate became its own independent municipality on February 2, 1907. The town was first settled by fishermen and their families during the early 1800s. The discovery of salt water Lighthouse Point in 1827 led to increased development around the lighthouse and adjacent wharf area. In 1885, George Washington Key opened the Keys Canal system which connected St Petersburg with Jupiter River at Margate Harbor in what is now Downtown Palm Beach. This canal allowed for more inland development including hotels, stores and other businesses that would become staples of today's community. As more people moved into Margate and surrounding areas during the late 19th century, new school districts were established as well as an increase in social activities such as dances and picnics which helped keep residents engaged through summer months. By 1912 there were over 100 residences within one-half mile (1 km) of downtown Margate!
