Margate is known for its seafood restaurants and white sand beaches. The history of Margate begins with Captain John Smith's landing there in 1607. He named it "Margate" after his ship, theMargatuck. In 1786, British general Edward Braddock landed here with 4,000 soldiers to take possession of Florida for England. After a three-day battle, they were soundly defeated by Spanish forces under José de San Martín and retreated back to Pensacola. In 1821, cattle ranchers arrived in what is now Margate with their animals following a survey of land that had been purchased from Native Americans by Manuel Plantain Jr., who became a United States Senator from Florida from 1828 to 1830 and later served as Secretary of War under Andrew Jackson. He donated some 90 square miles (200 km2) ofland including parts of what are now downtown Margate and Unterseeburgen Island today to form Bay County. The original townsite was called New Eutaw Springs but never grew very large because most peopleesteaded around where they lived or fished rather than build new homes near the water's edge like many other settlements in those days.. In 1840 General James Kenedy attacked Fort Moultrie on Unterseeburgen Island during the Second Seminole War and burned part of it before withdrawing with his troops after being repelled by local militia led by Colonel Augustus Herrell..
