Gun lights were first used in Margate, Florida as a warning signal to other vessels. At the time, gun lights were only used on large warships and could not be seen from land. The first use of gun lights by Margate residents was in 1895 when a fire destroyed the local lighthouse. The first set of gun lights were erected in 1912 by the Margate Volunteer Fire Department. By 1925, there were three sets of gun lights in operation. The original light poles had been replaced by two new poles which gave an Appaloosa-style design with a green light at the top and a white light at the bottom. In 1941, Governor Lawton Chiles authorized installation of automatic gunsights on all Margate chartered boats. These devices allowed for easier identification of Vessels offshore from shoreline and helped prevent collisions between boats and vessels while fishing or racing off shorelines in international waters.

Margate, Florida was founded in 1868 by Captain David Barron. The town became a resort town on the St. Johns River and soon became popular for vacationers because of its beautiful beaches, excellent fishing, and mild climate. The area now includes parts of Margate Beach, Fort Myers Beach, Jupiter Beach, and North Naples. The first settlement in what is now Margate was established on the site of present-day Margate Point by Captain Barron as early as 1868. At that time the river was a very different place; it was an arm of the sea rather than a landlocked body of water. The settlers built their homes along the banks of the river until they could come ashore to provide themselves with fresh water and goods necessary for their subsistence. Captain Barron's expedition set out from New York City in July 1870 with seventy men to explore this new area which he called "the country beyond Miami." They landed at Key West on August 5th and began exploring this newly discovered beachhead before returning to New York City on September 11th.* Three weeks later they sailed back downriver again but had not yet reached their destination when they were met by hostile Indians who killed all but one man†.* This event is still remembered in Margate today as one of history's most tragic episodes in American colonization of our continent†.* *‡ See footnote 1 below for more information about this incident*‡ In 1871 Captain Barron organized a group of eleven men to establish a permanent settlement at what is now Margate Beach**.* At that time there were no roads or trails connecting these isolated communities so travel between them was difficult if not impossible. It took many months for the men to build roads and trackways which allowed people from different parts of Florida access to these valuable resources once they had arrived in town*‡ ** There are descendants living near Margate who can show you some evidence that early residents did indeed build roads/tracks*** ‡ * In fact there are several large boulders lying just outside city limits which may have been used as markers leading visitors into town back then
The Margate area was first settled by the Arawaks in 350 BC. They were a Miami-speaking people who migrated from South America. The area was named for the salt marsh near present day Margate, England. The first European to visit the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano, captain of the Spanish ship " Nuestra Señora de La Concepción" on October 14, 1513. He charted what is now known as Florida and named it San Miguel de Margate (Saint Michael's Marsh). In 1763, while British forces were fighting against France in North America, Lieutenant Governor James Cook discovered Margate Harbor and its salt marshes when he sailed his ships through the Straits of Gibraltar. He named the harbor after Sir John Franklin who had mapped most of Antarctica during his expedition of 1827-28.
