After the war ended, most of The Tigers' weapons were melted down and reused by other units in various wars throughout Florida until they were finally sold to Margate City Hall in 1924 for $1,000. In 1949, Margate began hosting its own annual summer carnival which became known as “Margate Fair”. This event continues to this day with over 1 million visitors each year! In 1966, Margate established its first city hall and since then has grown tremendously with annexations from other towns within central Florida including De Land (2008), Melbourne (2012), Stonington (2015), Winter Park (2018) and Punta Gorda (2020).
Margate, Florida is a small town located in Alachua County,Florida. The population was 1,615 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ferry Island Metropolitan Statistical Area. The economy of Margate is based on agriculture and fishing. The first people to permanently settle Margate were the Muscogee Indians in 1824. They built a cabin on what is now State Road A1A north of town. In 1892, Manuel Gomez bought land east of town and began to build a sugar plantation called New Mexico Cane sugar cane plantations which are still in operation today as Centennial Sugar Plantations LLC. In 1925, Margate became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and five trustees who governed bylaws and conducted elections. In 1927, the name was changed to Margate after then Mayor George Hargrave had it suggested to him by his friend Wm Hargrave Jr., son of then Mayor George Hargrave Sr.. In 1930, when Highway 96 was constructed through central Alachua County, residents voted to move their government from downtown Margate (now known as Old Town) to the new highway median directly across from the older city center where they continued to conduct all their business including electing their own officials until 1971 when they returned back downtown under current local government regulations established by law that year . On December 20th 1951 Commissioners John Gartland and Donny Hubbard were killed while serving as officers on road construction near present day Gulf Breeze when their truck ran off the road into a swampy area some sixty feet wide leaving them trapped for over an hour before being rescued by local firefighters who used cutting tools cut through the swamp above them freeing them just in time for Christmas dinner that night

The move helped spur development in the town as mail carriers began delivering goods directly to residents instead of travelling through Jacksonville each day. In 1951, the town annexed another nearby village, North Fort Myers Beach. The population of Margate peaked at over 10,000 in 1960 but has slowly begun to decline since then; however, it still remains an important community with several thousand residents today.
