In 1861 Captain John Fenton sold extensive property including what now forms part of central Margate to Major Henty for £1,000 (). British Army officer Colonel Nathaniel Banks purchased this property in 1873 and developed it into one of the largest cotton plantations in America (the Banks Cotton Estate). Besides these five Protestant denominations substantial Jewish families lived here prior to World War II when many people either emigrated or left due to persecution throughout Europe during that time period
