The history of firearms in Margate, Florida began with the early settlers. In 1853, Captain William Fenton and his family moved from Cincinnati, Ohio to what is now Margate in north-central Florida. He founded a small lumber business and soon became well-known for his rifles and shotguns. TheCaptain's sons, Captains John Fenton and James Fenton, continued the tradition of firearm ownership in their families. By the late 1800s, muzzleloading guns were becoming more popular than rifle hunting because they could be fired by hand instead of using an armory muzzleloader drill. In 1895, Colonel Augustus Hodge purchased land at the mouth of Lower Winter Harbor Creek from the Seminole Tribe. This area would become known as "Hodgeville." Colonel Hodge built a large home on this property that remains today as one of Margate's most popular tourist destinations. For many years, Hodgeville was one of the most important points of contact between Native Americans and European settlers in south central Florida. In 1907, Captain John Ladd established a gunsmithing business in nearby Fort Myers Beach. From this business sprang forth an industry that continues to thrive to this day: firearms repair and restoration. In 1923 Captain Harry Abram opened Margate's first grocery store which would become one of town’s most popular attractions for its fresh produce and delicious local seafood items. The population was 9,774 at the 2010 census. The town was founded on August 3, 1892 by J.W. Holland as an agricultural settlement named for Margate Bay on the Brevard River. The name change to Margate after World War I when local produce became scarce in nearby Gainesville due to war production shortages. By 1928, Margate had reached its current size of 9,774 residents and had developed into a commercial center with several shopping malls and banks. In January 1957, following passage of the state's first comprehensive land development law, developers began purchasing land north of downtown Margate for what would become known as Park Avenue Developments Incorporated (PADI). PADI soon became one of the most important real estate firms in Florida with properties throughout central and northern Miami-Dade County and portions of Broward County. In 1973 PADI merged with another real estate firm to form Atlantic Properties Co., which remains one of the country's major proponents of luxury housing developments such as Regency Marriotts on Kendall Beach Boulevard in Coral Gables and Four Seasons Resort & Casino on President James Buchanan Highway in Fort Lauderdale today. In 1984 Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of what remained from PADI including much of the downtown business district; however redevelopment continued apace with new office buildings erected near First Coast Medical Center and other businesses relocated inland alongiesta avenue adjacent to Interstate 95/US 1 freeway Exit 171B southbound Maitland Road until 2007 when all infrastructure was torn down for re-development as The Villages at Jacksonville Landing Phase II which included new hotels such as DoubleTree by Hilton hotel across I-95 from Everglades National Park entrance)
