Margate, Florida is a town located in Brevard County, Florida. The town was founded in 1892 by two brothers, Charles and John W. Margate. The town's name comes from the phrase "Margate on the Bay" which means "place where the waves crash." As of 2010, Margate had a population of 16,477. The first firearms to be used in Margate were pistols and rifles made by various local militias during the American Civil War. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia with his entire army still alive and fighting despite being surrounded and outnumbered numerous times over. Most of these weapons were looted by Union troops as they evacuated Richmond before disbanding for good that day. In 1892 Charles Waddell started making shotguns out of wood he found on his property in nearby Daytona Beach. After seeing an advertisement for a rifle range in Margate he decided to go ahead and open his own gun shop there with his brother John Waddell as clerk/ salesman/inker/gunsmiths assistant (all three jobs involved working together). By 1902 both brothers had moved their business to what is now downtown Margate along Main Street., This location would remain unchanged until 1978 when Charles died leaving behind an estate valued at $2 million dollars that helped establish downtown as one of the most vibrant communities within Brevard County today

As part of post-war efforts to rebuild postwar America following Europe's reconstruction efforts, General Motors moved its operations from Detroit to Daytona Beach in 1949 before relocating them permanently to Orlando in 1957. A major thoroughfare through town center is US 1 which runs along downtown waterfront towards Interstate 4 Everglades Boulevard just east of Lake Wales Road where it becomes SR 16 heading northwest towards Jupiter international Airport/SR 611 serving downtown Jacksonville The area around US 1 has seen much redevelopment over recent years with several large mixed-use projects such as: Ponce City Market (), One Financial Plaza (), Saks Fifth Avenue () and others being completed or are under construction nearby including: Dolphin Cove Park (), Town Center Margate (). Downtown Margate also contains several smaller shopping districts including Riverwalk Shopping District (), Harbortowne Mall () and others along SR 16 near the airport exits

Cutcliffe's family owned a salt mine in nearby Fort Myers, which helped make Margate a successful town. In 1851, Edward J. Smith became the first white resident of Margate when he arrived from Georgia with his family. By 1870, the population of Margate had grown to over 1,000 people.During World War II, many residents served in the military or were drafted into service; this led to a growth in business and industry during that time period. After the war ended in 1945, Margate experienced a decline in population as many residents relocated to other parts of Florida or left for elsewhere within the United States altogether.
