Margate, Florida is a small town located in Duval County, Florida. The population of the town was 584 as of the 2010 census. The name comes from the Danish word "marga," meaning "meadow." The town was founded in 1919 by developer Harry Smith and named for his daughter Margrete. The first settlers in Margate were two families who came overland from Denmark on their way to North America. They built a cabin in what is now the northeast corner of town. A few years later, another group of refugees arrived on horseback after fleeing World War I. They called themselves the White Sands Bandits and terrorized the area for several months before being driven out by local farmers. In 1925, developer Harry Smith developed land east of Margate into what would become known as Satellite Beach County Park. He named it for his daughter Margrete, who had just turned seven at the time he started development. satellite beach park served as a community center and agricultural fairgrounds until it was dedicated to tourism in 1949 when it became known as Margate Beach Resort & Marina*. In 1951, two new developers purchased satellite beach park and changed its name to Margate Boulevard*.* In 1957, Sunrise Assisted Living Center opened adjacent to Margate Boulevard which helped addictions services to the community*.* In 1978*, Market Basket opened its first store within walking distance of all residents*.* By 1990*, only three businesses remained on Satellite Beach Drive: Harbourside Restaurant, Continental Inn/Bakery & Pub and Sunrise Assisted Living Center*. According to US Census data filed in 2000*, there were 685 people residing inMargate**(*This number increased to 703 by 2010). As more people moved into margaret beach resort&marina+, crime rates began decreasing while property values rose*.* By 2005*, all but one business had closed down or been sold while SunriseAssistedLivingCenter continued operations until 2011; this included marketing support functions such as sales seminars for retailers *.* Today there are just nine businesses remaining on Satellite Beach Drive: Harbourside Restaurant, Continental Inn/Bakery & Pub, Sunrise Assisted Living Center (formerly Main Street Cafe), Dunes Surf Shop††/, Lighthouse Marina‡‡*/*) - all five located within walking distance of each other! Margate, Florida was founded on December 12, 1895 by John H. Elder and his brother-in-law, George W. Elder. The town of Margate was laid out on a tract of land that had been given to them by the late Colonel Robert McKay. The first school in Margate opened its doors in September 1896. The community rapidly developed and soon boasted a library, grocery store, post office, two churches (First Baptist and Methodist), five schools (grades K-12), several businesses (a millinery shop and a bakery), as well as residential properties for residents who desired to live close to the business district or the beach. In 1916, Margate acquired an ordinance establishing a fire protection system and began providing streetlights. In 1924, Margate annexed neighboring communities of Clearwater Beach and North Port which gave the town an estimated population of 10,000 people. By 1938, Mayor J.C. Burch announced plans to annex Stillwater Beach which would have added another 10K people to the mix. However due to financial issues atMargate City Hall this annexation never took place; still today there are few if any records indicating what actually happened with this proposed annexation
