There is no doubt that binoculars have been around for centuries. However, the first recorded use of binoculars in Margate was in 1827. This was when Captain George Stephenson and his men used them to view the then new harbor at Margate. It was not until 1922 that the Margate City Council placed a restriction on their sales to residents because they were considered “noisome instruments”. In 1934, a new building was erected on State Road A1A which housed the Margate Municipal Library. The library stocked a variety of books including Binoculars! With its location within easy walking distance of most residents, it seems that even back in 1934 there must have been quite a demand for these amazing tools! In 1937, two local businessmen pooled their money and purchased an old lens factory in Fenton which they converted into a binocular manufacturing business. They began producing high-quality binoculars and sunglasses under the name of Ocular Corporation. By 1945, there were over 100 employees working at this facility and production continued until 1949 when it abruptly stopped due to World War II occupation forces efforts. After the war, production resumed but again slowed down due to lack of demand from customers who had moved away or found other hobbies or interests during those years! It wasn’t until 1978 that Ocular reopened its doors as an optical store with intent to revive interest inbinocular manufacture by introducing innovative new designs such as water resistant cases and illuminated eyepieces. Unfortunately, this venture didn’t pan out as hoped and closed shop just two years later after achieving only marginal success! That same year saw another closure when one employee lost his job because he couldn’t make enough money selling glasses online! Finally, in 2002 AGI Optical (now known as OpticsUSA) opened its doors at 7th Avenue E in Margate with plans to bring back interest inbinocular manufacture through innovative design advancements along with marketing support from top industry professionals! Unfortunately, this too failed to materialize; instead AGI closed up shop once again after having barely made any progress against its predecessor’s lackluster performance!! Today we can still enjoy good qualitybinoculars thanks largely to AGI Optical who has maintained their tradition of innovation while also expanding their product line ever since their inception more than fifty years ago!!!
