Margate, Florida is a town located on the Gulf of Mexico in Bay County, Florida. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. Margate is one of two towns in Bay County and it is also the only incorporated municipality. The other incorporated municipality is Key West. The first white settlers to Margate were James A. Dickson and his wife Catharine who arrived in 1867 from Scotland. They erected a cabin on what is now Widespread Road which served as their home for the next 15 years until they moved to their present site on Catfish Creek in 1876. James A. Dickson died in 1881 and his widow Catherine continued to live there with her three children until her death in 1924. In 1886, Captain John Fenton bought land southwest of Margate from General William Tecumseh Sherman for $5,000 cash and 3/4 shares of stock in the Stonington Coal Company which he had founded two years earlier. Fenton named his new settlement Fort Morgan after Simon Bolivar Peninsula where he had been stationed during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). The town began to develop rapidly due to this early investment and by 1890 it had a population of 189 people including 13 women who worked for Fenton as teachers, nurses and seamstresses. Fenton's company failed within a few years however so by 1900 Fort Morgan was again deserted with just six residents remaining when it was abandoned again by its original owners because they could not find buyers for their land or coal resources that year; these assets passed into private hands before being sold off to various developers over the next several decades until they all came together around 1990 to form Margate Corporation which still owns most of what used to be called Fort Morgan today including its buildings and landlady's quarters dating back to 1886! When word got out about how great things were happening near Margate there beganto be an influx of visitors looking for someplace new to live whether it be sunbathing or swimming - something that hadn't been available much closer upstate since fort martin became abandoned! By 1935Fort Morgan had once again become homey with 137 residents living there plus 25 transient visitors who rented rooms from Mrs Fenton while she cooked dinner every night! Today only 10% of Fort Morgan remains standing while most of the buildings have been replaced by more modern structures but many old timers are still able to visit during weekday lunchtime when they can wander down through those windows into history!
