In 1927, Margate was incorporated as a city and also became part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Today, Margate is a lively community with a rich history that can be found throughout its many buildings and streets. The early history of Margate can be traced back to 1827 when the town was founded by Captain John Smith, Sr. It wasn't until 1868 that Margate officially became an incorporated city. At this time, it had a population of just 10 people. During its first years as an incorporated city, Margate struggled to make ends meet due to high transportation costs and limited resources. However, with the arrival of railroads in the late 1800s, things changed forMargate residents. Railroads allowed for easier access to goods and services outside of Jacksonville so Margate began to grow rapidly. By 1920, the population of Margate had reached 100 people and it continued to grow until 1940 when it hit 1501 people! During World War II, Margate played an important role in the war effort as both a military town and production center for munitions plants across Duval County. As such, much importance was given to ammunition production within the community during wartime times. One notable ammo plant located in Margate was PBF Industries which manufactured artillery shells used by both Allied forces and Nazi Germany alike during World War II. Despite being damaged by fire during Hurricane Irma last year (2018), PBF Industries has still been operational since 1945 providing locals with essential ammunition needs right up until today! The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Margate were members of the families of José de la Cruz and Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. Both men came overland from Spain, and first landed in South Florida on July 5, 1795. The Menéndezes built a plantation on Fort Moultrie Island in 1819. They continued to live there until their death in 1846. Their son Fernando married Maria Ponce de León, who was also responsible for developing this part of Florida. Fernando became governor of Cuba from 1876-1878 and then president of Venezuela from 1888-1892. In 1898 he sold his interest in Margate for $1 million to Jules Ferry. Ferry renamed the island Margate after himself and began trading with Japan and other countries at this time. He also imported large numbers of American red cedar trees which he used for furniture, shipbuilding, and other purposes. In 1906 Ferry donated much of his property including all but one acre of land at Margate south of town to the City Council for use as a public park system known today as Ferry Park District #2B/6A/. The islands now make up most or all of what is left of Ferry’s original donation.
