Marco Island is a small, isolated island in the Miami-Dade County area of Florida. The population was 2,811 at the 2000 census. It is home to Marco Island National Seashore and several golf courses, including one that has been ranked as one of the top ten courses in America by Golf Digest. The island's only store and post office are located on the main road. The first Europeans to visit Marco Island were Spanish sailors who sighted it on their way southward from Key West in 1565. The name "Marco" is thought to be derived from Māori ōrangi or "Island of Young Men." A Danish trader, Peder Christensen, named it after his friend and mentor, Marco Polo. In 1810 American navigator John F Kennedy discovered the island while sailing through this part of Florida; he named it after his father-in-law, Joseph Kennedy Sr., who owned land on nearby Key Biscayne. In 1886 Captain John Waddell became the first person to live permanently on Marco Island when he built a cabin there for himself and his family. Waddell had sailed northwest from Cuba via Haiti and then made landfall about 125 miles (200 kilometers) east-northeast of Tampa Bay on July 1st during what would become known as Tropical Storm Audrey (later Hurricane Andrew). Although Damage Control teams did all they could do to prevent major damage from occurring due largely to strong winds and waves caused by Audrey's energy which also peeled away large chunks of coral off nearby islands such as Stonington Beach, North Myrtle Beach Pelicans nested atop destroyed residences until dawn hours Monday morning August 25th!),Captain Waddell soon realized that an open sea adventure was not for him & turned back before reaching land again! Prior knowledge of Hispaniola having been acquired by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto prior thereto! Although never intended for permanent human occupancy maritime interests motivated early endeavors with some buildings being erected: lighthouse (1886), wharf (1915), barracks/hospital/storage building(1922), navy barracks/repair shop(1946), marina(1969)),and now national seashore /marina facility! However following World War II most activity ceased with numerous people living ashore transiently during wartime shortages due primarily to climate change related disruptions… until very Recently!!! As you can imagine many interesting stories have transpired over these years resulting in some memorable moments & photos including: President George H W Bush speaking at turtle show fundraiser event attended by many stars including First Lady Barbara Bush; Governor Jeb Bush playing golf at Hankinson Plantation Resort; Mayor David Dinkins officiating at marriages between Royce & Cindy Adams; Mayor Buddy Dyer welcoming new residents onto town limits field day picnic lunchtime!!! The original inhabitants were Cane Islanders who hunted deer and other game that supplemented their diet from rice fields that grew nearby. Over time, some Germans also migrated to Marco Island but they soon gave up their German culture for English one when they took over leadership from the Spaniards during British rule over Florida . In 1799, following independence from Spain , two German families established a plantation colony near present day Fort Myers . By 1800 there were about eighty Germans living on Marco Island . In 1814 an act was passed Congress creating Florida as a national territory comprising all present day Miami-Dade County including parts of Key Biscayne (then called Key West) andMarco Islands (now part of Miami). On January 30th 1903 , under an act by President Theodore Roosevelt , all remaining Mexican Controlled Areas within Floridas boundaries were placed into an independent United States Territory known as "Marco Island." This created new opportunities for development on this remote unincorporated island which had been Tory Burchs biggest fruit production center supplying Southern California with mangos until prices crashed due to improved transportation methods available after railroads came online
In 1823, Marco Island was purchased by the United States from Spain. The island had been part of Cuba since 1492.
