Marco Island, Florida is a small island located in the Everglades National Park. The island was first settled by Native Americans and was used as a hunting ground for their animals. In 1821, the area became part of Miami-Dade County and was named after Marco Point on Key Biscayne. In 1927, the United States Coast Guard set up a lookout on Marco Point to monitor shipping in the area. A red dot sight was set up and operated from this location until 1969 when it was replaced by a sonar system. The island became part of the United States after the Treaty of Paris ended World War II. Marco Island is a census-designated place (CDP) in Monroe County, Florida, and its population was 507 as of 2010. The name "Marco" comes from Italian, meaning "headland." The term "Island" refers to an artificial land formation created by humans to create a haven for Ships at sea. At one time, there were over 100 islands scattered throughout the Gulf of Mexico. The name has been used to refer to many different places since then including Miami Beach on mainland Florida, Key West on Cuba, and St Croix on VIth US Virgin Islands. The history of Marco Island begins with settlers who arrived during 1802 and 1803 following the aging Spanish Lieutenant Hernando de Soto's expedition across Central America looking for new land to North American colonies. De Soto's exploration led him to what is now Marco Island which he named Santa Clara de la Bahía de Cuba after his sister; however no record exists of this naming decision having any effect whatsoever upon subsequent development or use of Marco Island as it does today! After sailing past San Miguel Point on Isla Grande northward into Tampa Bay they anchored off what is now Cape Lookout State Park on 15 February 1794 while awaiting news from Spain about their upcoming voyage across Tampa Bay and whether or not they would discover any new lands along the way! In reality though Spanish ships did not explore much beyond Tampa Bay until 1795 when Gaspar da Graca discovered brigantine La Pinta west tipof Sarasota bay - thus ending Spanish exploration in that area! However because Captain James Cook sighted Guam (then Marquesas) off southwestern tipof SarasotaBay on 11 November 1768 - long before Da Graca's discovery - he claimed Guam for Great Britain!! This event marks one possible reason why early maps showing only Islas Gordas & Menores were published prior to Spain discovering Guam!!! It wasn't until 1840 when French explorer Jacques Cartier sailed past near present day Pensacola Harbor claiming alligator land as well as several small islands southwest including San Cristobal – making landfall near present day Fort Pierce – that Europeans began their systematic exploitation/exploration/settlement efforts within coastal areas adjoining Mobile Bay– leading ultimately to establishment of Mobile County!!! With so many waves coming ashore contact lenses soon became necessary for differences in light levels inside coves whereon Selma Lighthouse now stands!!! Soaring drinking water prices also caused problems aboard shipsto prevent mutiny amongst sailors!! In short, following Alonso Ortiz sighting Presidio de Magellan Strait between Fla & Texas circa 1605after sailing around cape Martiniqueastrengthening trade routes with India etc.– pirates had begun operating within Gulf Coast region&northwest Floridas area……….. By 1800 some 1000+ people lived here……………. With increasing international trade thru Panama City [the old] Venezuela terminalmany people came here seeking opportunity…..
