In October of 1907, Marco Island became the location of a gunfight that would have an enormous impact on the history of Florida. The fight began when two gunmen, Johnnie Barnes and Harry Huggins, ambushed and robbed a group of farmers near the island. After robbing the farmers, Barnes and Huggins went into town to ask for help from local law enforcement. However, they were instead met with hostility from local citizens who believed that guns should only be used for protection purposes. As a result of this confrontation, both gunmen were shot and killed by Sheriff Tom Lowry. This event is often cited as one of the most deadly in Florida history.

In November 1975, after Richard Nixon’s resignation as President of the United States, he moved back to Marco Island with his family and began living there full time until his death in 1999. Since the early 1990s, Marco Island has become known for its annual Oktoberfest beer festival which attracts over 100 craft breweries from around the country.
