Marco Island is a small island in the Gulf of Mexico about midway between Pensacola, Florida and Mobile, Alabama. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. The island is part of the Pensacola-Bradenton-Ft. Walton Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first humans to visit Marco Island were Soo Charley Hargrave and his family on October 12, 1845 while exploring the area for new land to purchase in south Florida. A group of six blacks led by Capt. Wm. Gilmore landed on the island on December 14th under cover of darkness and took possession of what is now known as Old Point Comfort beach area before setting up camp along an unnamed creek near present day Sunrise Boulevard/Old Spanish Trail Road intersection. In 1857, Marco Island became part of Lee County when it was organized from parts of Bradford and Holmes counties. At that time there were no stores or phone lines so mail had to be sent viaboat which often took days to get back to Jacksonville or Tampa Bay - a problem that continued until after World War II when roads were built through most parts of the county! In 1907, construction began on Brown’s Ferry Bridge over Clearwater River just north of present day Sunrise Boulevard/Old Spanish Trail Road intersection; this bridge provided physical access from mainland Florida to Marco Island for both vehicular traffic and cargo shipping necessary for its then booming citrus industry! It was not until 1925 that US 41 (now US 231) was routed directly across the river connecting Marco Island with Pensacola! Today you can still see evidence of this bridge including several large concrete retaining walls dating back to that era! On January 1st 1915, during WWI American forces landed troops on Marco Island providing them with airfields and water supplies necessary for their operations in Europe On October 3rd 1945 USS Indianapolis sunk off shore off Naples killing all but 43 men onboard!! This event has been immortalized by advertising slogans such as “If it wasn’t for them we would have been bombed” Today there are two beaches named after those lost in WWII: USS Indianapolis Beach & destroyer escort USS Ponce Beach . There are also several memorials located throughout the community including one dedicated to Sgt John Fortunato who died during combat service aboard USS Zumwalt (DDG-101). The island has a population of around 2,500 people today. The Marco family first came to the island in 1867 from Italy. They built a farmstead and started to grow crops. In 1870, they moved to what is now the town of Marco Island. The Marco brothers bought land near what is now the Main Street intersection. They built a sawmill and other businesses on their land. In 1927, Lorenzo Marco died unmarried at the age of 86 years old. His brother Giovanni took over his estate and continued running the business until his death in 1978. Today, Giovanni's descendants run the business as an LLC.
Marco Island was founded in 1795 by Marco de la Cruz, a Spaniard who sailed from Havana. The island became part of the United States in 1821. It is now a U.S. military airbase and research center.
