In 1845, US Naval officer James Kenedy Purch set out for Marco Island with a party of Marines to establish a military post on the island. After arriving onMarco Island, Kenedy purchased land from Indians and constructed a fortification which he called Fort George at present day's Ponce Inlet. Kenedy also built a church and school onthe island for his Marines and their families. After World War II, much development took place on Marco Island due to its proximity to Pensacola Beach and its potential as an airfield for military aircraft during World War II. The airfield was eventually developed into what is now Pensacola International Airport. However, despite its importance during World War II, little remains of the airfield today aside from some wrecked buildings that were once used as storage facilities for planes parked at the airport's runway grasslands circa 1960-1970s.. Today, much redevelopment has taken place on both sides of Pensacola Bayou which has led to increased development around downtown Pensacola Beach including new bars/restaurants/shops (the old "Cuba Club" being converted into "Pensacola Bayou Live" restaurant), several apartment complexes (including one known as "The Gables"), two hotels (one known as Hyatt Regency Atascosa Springs Resort & Spa - opened in 2010 - and another known as Embassy Suites Panama Canal Tower - opened in 2013) as well as new MARCO ISLAND LANDING strips adjacent to all these developments providing more than just housing opportunities; this makes up what may be now considered one continuous town or city within itself although no such term exists anywhere else within Florida...
