Today, there are very few remnants of Marco Island’s past; most everyone who lives on the island seems to know about it from their childhood memories or stories. One reason that Marco Island has been so important throughout its history is because it was where many harmful diseases originated before they spread throughout Europe. During World War II, many Japanese soldiers stationed on Marco Island contracted diseases such as malaria and typhoid fever which led to their deaths. This gave rise to some speculation that these illnesses may have originated from contact withamanualy-infected animals on this tiny island during wartime purposes (Henderson). Additionally,Marco Island helped promote tourism within Florida during this time period; visitors would come here to see all of what Tallahassee had to offer but also find some much needed peace and relaxation (Goudreau). So although its population does not amount to much today compared to other places in Florida – due largely to lack of publicity – I believe that despite its decline recently,Marco Island still retains some very important aspects for both local history and tourism within our state!
Marco Island was founded in 1795 by the brothers Marco and Giovanni. The island became a part of the United States in 1821. It is one of the ten most populous islands in Florida and is home to over 100,000 people.
