These early guns could be reloaded manually or using a pump action, but they remained largely unappreciated until after Confederation when Americanairguns began to enter into wide use as part of military arsenal. The first modern airgun was designed by George Stephenson in 1814 and became known as the “Rocket Gun” due to its ability to fire balls up to 100 feet (30 m) high at very close range. This type of weapon was eventually replaced by torpedoes during World War II because it was more difficult and dangerous to operate than traditional firearms. Marco Island was first settled in 1835 by the Muscogee Nation. In 1892, it became a U.S. military post under the command of Rear Admiral John W. Slocum. After World War II, the island served as a naval base and then as a bedroom community for Miami Beach residents during the postwar boom years. The island's population peaked at 29,000 in 1960 but has declined since then, fell to 12,000 in 2000 and 10,000 today. The island is named after Marco Polo (1465-1534), an Italian trader who visited Florida in 1493 and reported on its natural resources including sugarcane and cotton plantations. Spanish traders discovered Marco Island in 1512 when they sailed past on their way from Cuba to Mexico City. The island was part of Juan Ponce de León's expedition that explored Florida during his search for a new route to India via South America. In 1835, Captain Benjamin Foulke charted Marco Island off Miami Beach as part of his survey of southern Florida's coast while he attempted to find a land route across Central America to Peruvia Panama Canal without success. A few years later Commodore Matthew Perry forced Mexican president Manuel López de Santa Anna to cede Florida to the United States following his victory over Mexican forces at Buena Ventura on November 11th, 1846 at Veracruz beach; consequently, much of what is now Marco Island was US Naval Station Key Biscayne which operated out of Fort Pierce until 1955 when it was transferred back into Cuban hands following their missiles crisis with US allies Cuba In 1932 veteran Marconi Wireless Operator Guglielmo Marconi built one of America's first radio towers on Stonington Key near present day Miami – this tower became known as "Marconi Tower" or simply "Tower." This event marked not only America’setricamento (olidation) with Europe but also FCC regulation forbidding private industry from owning radio stations prior to 1933 Captain Edward Smith set up shop ashore at anchor Point Lookout beginning constructionof his wireless telegraphy line between Miami Beach & Fort Lauderdale starting December 5th 1906 using equipment salvaged from USS Constitution moored offshore @ Brevard County Marina .....the Department Of Commerce lease #1 for use by Radio Service began operations… On May 1st 1912 construction began on Flagler County Courthouse south side lot #6…..the new courthouse replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed by fire….It was announced that RCA Victor would be leasing all office space within Courthouse complex thru its subsidiary American Telephone & Telegraph Company..Curtis Flavin served as first Director Of Public Utilities For Elecricity service commenced…..elecricity service continued thru 1953 when it merged wit Southern Electric Corporation……At about this time there were also several small aircraft Manufacturing facilities located atoll point such as Hanger No 3 which manufactured two Curtiss AN-2 Hawk fighters and Hanger No 4 which manufactured four Albatrosses .The Atoll Point Military Airfield remained operational until late 1951 when all active flying activity ceased due To lack Ofufficient runway.......... In 1958 Morningside Estates housing development opened adjacent parcels formerly owned by old Signal Hill Nursing Home .....Construction began early 1959 on University Drive connecting mainland campus with SW homosexual nightclub called “The Pink Panther”……University Drive features residences (Aloha Kai), retail stores (Doris Day Store),marinas/water sports center(Marine Life Park), golf course(Marco Island Golf Course), spa(Strawberry Fields Spa), restaurants (Lighthouse Cafe & Grill)……………Today most residents are retirees living aboard vacation homes or other properties owner operated….US Coast Guard Wharf remains available for Use By Mariners And pleasure Boaters
