Musgrave's scopes became very popular and he continued manufacturing them until his death in 1828. Many other people followed in his footsteps and began shipping scopes to Maitland. Eventually, this hobby turned into an important part of Florida culture and history. Today, visitors can visit Musgrave Tower and learn more about how these scopes were originally developed.

In 1876, a sawmill opened up here along with other mills throughout Hillsborough County by Jeptha Waddell and others who pooled their resources to build what would become known as "the Ringgold Mill". The first post office in Maitland opened on February 14, 1892 (the date still appears on local ZIP codes). By 1905 there were over 20 businesses operating in downtown Maitlandsowntown area including banks (J & S Bank - 1908), drygoods stores (Thornhill's Grocery - 1909), candy stores (Pecan Palace - 1912), hardware stores (Odom Hardware - 1912) and ice cream parlors (Frozen Delight Confectionery). The population size increased rapidly due to mining camps being established nearby such as Signal Hill Mines at present-day Winter Garden Boulevard and New Smyrna Beach at present day US 1st Street Northeast; these mines yielded gold and silver ore which went into production at nearby Piggly Wiggly Mine beginning around 1900 When World War I beganAmerica produced more than enough munitions to satisfy everyone but many people didn't actually need them because they could get them much cheaper abroad where production wasn't affected by war. This changed however when Germany started WWI because then more countries had to produce munitions so demand skyrocketed especially for rifles, artillery shells etcetera not just vegetables like we do now back home Maitlands economy suffered during the 1920s as world trade slowed down after the stock market crash while farmers experienced droughts followed by flood disasters throughout Florida due mainly to hurricanes like Andrew which devastated mainland USA but killed thousand’s of animals including horses mules cows pigs dogs cats etcetera . Hurricane Jebediah destroyed homes valued over $20000 leaving most residents homeless yet again making way for new housing developments such as Palm Harbor Estates located off Highway 41 next door where Sanford Shopping Center now stands
