In the early 1800s, a group of men and women platted out what would become Maitland. The area then consisted of only a few scattered houses and farms. By 1851, there were over sixty residents in the community. In 1861, Maitland was incorporated as a town. The first school in Maitland was built in 1877 by Mrs. Halsey and Mr. Fenton. It was located on the east side of Main Street near today’s Gadsden Elementary School. In 1870, the first post office opened at Maitland with three mailbags per week to serve the community. Maitland experienced growth from its small beginnings until it became one of Florida’s largest towns by 1900 with a population of around 2,500 people! By 1910, many businesses had been established downtown including lumberyards and grocers that continued to grow into the 21st century.
Maitland is a small town in Escambia County, Florida. The population was 2,562 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Maitland was first settled by Seminoles in the early 1800s. In 1855, J.C. Bigham bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land from the Seminoles and built a home on it known as Big Spring House. He also founded Maitland Male and Female Academy which still operates today as a private school with grades pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. In 1892, A H Clements purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land from J.C Bigham for $5 per acre and renamed it Maitland after his wife's maiden name, Maynardville in honor of A H Clements' father, General James Maynard who had been governor of Florida during the American Civil War and later served as United States Ambassador to Russia A post office called Maitland was established in 1896, but no mail ever reached its residents because there was no road available to carry mail to them . In 1907, an act passed by Congress allowed for the creation of counties within Florida so that Maitland would become part of Escambia County In 1915, Mrs Fannie Morehead opened her own grocery store in what is now the old Post Office building which became known as "The Gables." It remained open until 1975 when it closed due to lack of customers After World War II ended and America began rebuilding following the devastation caused by Hiroshima and Nagasaki, demand for goods returned to normal levels at The Gables Store which reopened in 1951 . By 1957, The Gables Store had outgrown its space so Mrs Morehead decided to build a new store on State Road 76 just east of town limits . She named it "The Forum" which remains operational today as an independently owned grocery store with gasoline pumps located next door to The Gables Store .Maiden Lane Shopping Center opened adjacent to The Forum in 1973 and has since been one of Pensacola's most popular shopping destinations with over 350 stores inside and outside its walls

Maitland, Florida is a small town in Polk County,Florida that was once one of the most important cotton plantations in the state. The town was founded by Captain James Maitland in 1837 and became a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1870, Maitland became part of Jacksonville, Florida. After Jacksonville's incorporation as a city in 1907,Maitland lost its status as a town and slowly went downhill until it fell out of favor with residents in the 1970s. Today,Maitland is an abandoned community located within walking distance of Interstate 495. In 1837, Captain James Maitland founded Maitland Plantation on Choctawhatchee Bayou near present day Tallahassee. The plantation turned into one of the most important cotton plantations in Florida due to its fertile soil and strategic location on Choctawhatchee Bayou which connected several regions including Pensacola and Mobile Alabama. With over 100 slaves working at Maitland Plantation, it was one of the largest slave plantations in south Florida. Captain James Maitlands death left his widow Mary with 3 young children; two were sent away to live with her brother John Harris at nearby Stonington Key after their father's death. When Harris died childless in 1846, Mary moved back home to be close to her children while they waited for their mother to remarry or find new employment opportunities outside of slavery before being sold again into slavery when she did so around 1850-1851 census records list 6 females under 15 years old living at "Maidstone" plantation along with 2 families from Pensacola who had been taken captive during Andrew Jackson's Mexican War Expedition as well as 3 girls from Georgia who had been enslaved thereabouts during American Civil War - NWTFS 17FHS mulatto woman 1 year old female (born c 1830), Hannah Fenton born about 1830 age not stated; all these women were emancipated by 1865 despite continuing residence on property until Creek Nation Removal Act forced them off land c 1880 Census records show 5 white women & 10 black men still living thereafter removal) The first free black family arrived at MaitLAND plantation around 1840 when Anthony Brown moved from Savannah Ga to work on its sugar cane farm adjacent to Tallahassee area where he met Anna Maria Booker (baptized Euphemia Cushing) daughter of Colonel John Booker Sr., owner & operator/manager Tallahassee sugarcane mill complex & other associated businesses including steamboat landing docks leased b Blacksmiths Warehouse Company dba Wilkinson Sawmill Cothouse Blk Ala milled flour for Tallahassee market Anna Maria Booker married Anthony Brown sometime before 1840 but no record exists showing themliving together long enough for their marriage certificate to be issued

In 1865, Maitland became a county seat after it was selected by commissioners from three adjacent counties. The courthouse burned down in 1898 but was rebuilt in 1902. The town's first store opened in 1837.
