Maitland is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Miami metropolitan area. It lies on the edge of Biscayne Bay and is located on the northeastern shore of Miamisound Bay. The name "Maitland" comes from Captain John Hawkins's landing there in 1795 during his third voyage as captain of HMS Dolphin. He named it for Maitland, England (then part of Scotland), where he had been sailing before his arrival in North America. At that time there were no towns or villages within miles of Maitland proper; only a few scattered farms and plantations dotting its otherwise open countryside. In 1819 Colonel Nathaniel Pope established Pope's Fort on present day Key Biscayne Boulevard to protect UF students who were then being transported by boat over the bay to visit their colleges in South Florida during what would become known as "the Seminole Wars". In 1834, when two hurricanes hit Cuba and caused extensive damage, Governor Andrew Jackson ordered all military forces northward along with vessels loaded with supplies and passengers to help sustain life while Havana was rebuilt. Lieutenant Colonel James Akins organized a detachment from Maitland Militia under command of Captains Moses Kilpatrick and Cornelius Ryan to provide support upon landfall; this force remained until 1835 when word arrived that Havana had been saved by evacuationist forces under General José de la Peña y Costilla led by José Antonio Vargas. On November 12th 1861 Jacksonvilleens Isaac Brown and Samuel Gist decided enough was enough after watching Confederate General Braxton Bragg bomb an important fortification near Gainesville early morning hours; they called out all able-bodied men into town for military drill which quickly turned into a riot when some local boys got too rowdy following orders not to fight although they could have done so without getting caught up in trouble; about 100 men assembled outside the courthouse brandishing firearms as orderlies formed a line between them and national guard troops began pushing them back inside followed by more gunfire as people started streaming out onto Sixth Street towards Government House whereupon Captain John Standish arrested several appellants including Brown (now state Senator) for disorderly conduct before turning them over to Sheriff Landon Richards for further punishment). due to flooding following Hurricane Dixie in 1965 much business relocated from downtownmiatlanders moved into surrounding neighborhoods such as Anacostia Park, North Apollo Hills Village, Coconut Grove East & West Side etc., resulting in increased crime rates especially around SUNY/Milton Road & NW 6th Ave.. However community efforts have since begun focusing on revitalization & redevelopment projects like: new schools (Washington Elementary School opened its doors fall 2006), renovated churches & mosques (Al-Noor Mosque opened its doors Fall 2009), new businesses (Cuba Cigars restaurant came online Spring 2009), high school soccer games are now played at Alachua High School instead of City Hall Fields due To funding available thru private donations many new homes have also been built or are planned for construction within miatlandersgrewup close knit multi cultural neighborhood with bartenders selling drinks at various restaurants meeting every night going dancing @ various spots during Ramadan

Maitland is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Maitland was founded in 1881 by Colonel Augustus Fenton and his wife Anna Belle Fenton. The name "Maitland" came from a Fort Walton Beach Indian Mission property located on the Miami River which had been named for General James K. Polk's mother-in-law, Mary Church Wilkins. Maitland is home to many historical sites including: the Anna Belle Fenton House (1881), Colonel Augustus' plantation home (1881), Fort Walton Beach National Marine Sanctuary (1912), and Northwest Florida Agrarian Experiment Station (1920). The first post office in Maitland was established in 1884 with Eustis as its second town location. In 1912, Maitland became an incorporated town under state law after being selected as one of six finalists for the purpose by Florida Legislature's Committee on Post Offices and Light Railroads. As a result of this selection process, Maitland became one of only two towns in Monroe County to be granted local self-government status when it did so on November 3rd, 1912; the other being Cape Coral. On February 2nd, 1913, Maitland also received its own water system and electric light service from Jacksonville Electric Railway Company becoming one of only three towns within county lines to do so at that time - along with North Port and Stonington - all having become fullblown municipalities since 1895 when they were unincorporated communities or military posts with no municipal power whatsoever beyond those delegated to them through state statute or ordinance
