Maitland has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three centuries. In 1821, John Wilkinson reported finding two villages in Maitland Creek: one on the east bank and one on the west bank. For many years, these two villages were considered separate towns. In 1892, however, the U.S. government organized all of Florida into counties, and Maitland became part of Lake County. The first settler in Maitland was Lucius Holland who arrived in 1828. He built a cabin on what is now West Main Street. Holland married Anna Purdy in 1830 and they had six children: four boys and two girls. Anna died in 1835 while Homer was serving as captain of militia forces against Seminole Indians near Fort Myers Beach. One daughter, Eliza Purdy Holland, married Reuben Atwater in 1840; they had five children:Arthur Atwater (1841-1914), Lydia Atwater (1843-1931), Edwin Atwater (1845-1927), Hana Atwater (1847-1920),and Julia Atwater (1851-1924). Homer Purdy Holland moved to Jacksonville in 1840s because he could not find work as a carpenter anywhere else in Florida due to his age or lack of experience at that time - he may have been among the first white men to settle down permanently in Jacksonville after being expelled from India during British rule there about 1800AD In 1853 Lucius Holland's grandson Alfred came over from Canada with his family and started trading goods along the Gulf Coast including salt pork and beans for items such as sugarcane and cotton . By 1860 Alfred had bought land northeast of downtown Jacksonville which he named after his paternal grandfather Lucius “Luther” Holland – this land later became known as East Side Park . From here he began building some significant business ventures such as Lighthouse Supply Company which supplied lights around Northeast Florida until it closed operations around 1910 Some other notable buildings constructed during this time include Alias House – completed c 1850 – an abandoned brick structure that still stands today next to Evergreen Cemetery across from Veterans Memorial Hospital off Northwest Fourth Street A number Log Cabin houses also remain standing throughout much older parts Of town such as on High Street just south side Iuka Avenue The original Post Office & Warehouse building located at corner Of High Street & Iuka Avenue still stands today across from City Hall

The area that now encompasses Maitland was first inhabited by topographic cultures who hunted the bear, deer, and other game in the area. In 1881, Andrew Maitland purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of what is now downtown Maitland from John Pemberton for $2 per acre. The purchase allowed for further growth in the community as farmers began to settle nearby. By 1902, there were over 100 homes in Maitland and businesses had sprung up including two banks and four grocery stores. In 1942, during World War II, Campo de Mayo became one of three U.S Army posts located along the Mexican border – along with Ft Taylor at Brownsville and Ft Richardson at Corpus Christi – responsible for supplying Allied troops with food and munitions while also providing training opportunities for American soldiers. During World War II Campo de Mayo processed more than 350 million pounds (148 million kilograms) of supplies necessary for Japan’s war effort alone! Additionally, during this time period Campo de Mayo served as a major center for research into chemical warfare munitions used by Nazi Germany! When America declared victory in 1945 following World War II, Campo de Mayo reverted back to Mexico City control once again! However, it would not be until 1984 when then-Mayor Tom McGrath dedicated an entire block on Main Street between Third Street and Fourth Street known today as “Milton Square” specifically to honor those who fought during World War II at Campo de Mayo! After years of discussion between local officials at both levels as well as international partners such as France and Canada – which ultimately led to funding from both countries – Campo de Mayo formally reopened its gates on November 3rd 1994 after being closed since 1940!
