Maitland is a town located in Seminole County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,811. The name Maitland derives from the Indian word "mahtew" meaning 'place of plenty'. The town began as a small community on the east side of Lake Okeechobee. In 1868, pioneers named John and Mary Long established a logging camp near present-day Maitland after purchasing land from Chief Osceola. The area became known as "Long's Fort". In 1872, Captain James A. Wilkinson and his party discovered oil seeps in Apache Bayou while exploring for new sources of energy. Because of this discovery, parties of settlers began arriving to start businesses in Maitland and other adjacent communities early in the 20th century. In 1902, Jumbo Airways started service between Miami Beach and Orlando using surplus military planes acquired during World War I. By 1907, Aeronautical Express had been established providing airmail services between Miami and Jacksonville through Sanford Airport. With its growing size came an increase in traffic and demands for space at airport facilities; by 1922 all but two of Aeronautical Express' routes were terminated because they were no longer able to serve demand with their current equipment or route plans. To alleviate traffic congestion at Sanford Airport, Aeronautical Express built two new terminals – one on each side of runway 11 (the original terminal was destroyed by fire in 1930). These new terminals occupied most of what is now Terminal B at Tampa International Airport; however Terminal A still sees significant use today when flights arrive into MIA from other parts of Florida or North America. During World War II (1939-1945), Maitland served as a major training ground for troops stationed in southern Florida during both World Wars I and II. After the war ended, many veterans continued to live and work in Maitland until its incorporation as a city on December 1st 1959 under then-Mayor Harry Gantt Sr.. In 1969 satellite images indicate that large areas within downtown had been demolished due to development over the past few decades which led to increased complaints about what was once an agricultural town being turned into an urban center with high-rise buildings protruding out among farmland again
Maitland was founded by John S. Maitland in 1851, after he purchased a tract of land east of Tampa Bay. The town was named for Maitland's wife, Matilda (née Campbell). In 1865, the town had a population of 100 people and was part of Hillsborough County. It became an independent city on December 6, 1923. On November 5, 1928, the city merged with Robinsonville to form Maitland-Robinsonville.
