Maitland, Florida is a small town located in Clay County, Florida. The population was 1,739 at the 2010 census. Maitland is part of the Jacksonville, Florida metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1892 by John Hutton and his wife Sarah Jane Hutton. In 2006, developer Golden Gate Ventures LLC announced plans to build a 2200-acre mixed use development called "The Harbor" on what had been used as an ammunition depot site adjacent to Porto Rico Marina near First Coast Bancorp's pierhead terminal on Fort Pierce Boulevard south of I-95W). The project would encompass retail shops, offices, residential units and commercial spaces built atop five existing military sites (four artillery batteries along one axis facing Interstate 95W; one large training battery) and include new docks nearby for maritime operations by the Navy's Fifth Fleet command center

In 1924, Dr. Wirt Easley purchased land north of Main Street from Jens Jensen for $4,000 and founded Jacksonville State College (later Jacksonville State University). He later donated another tracts of land totaling . In 1930 Drs. Easley and Hill founded Oneida Nursing Home which operated successfully until its closure in 1984 due to budget cuts by then-Governor Jeb Bush Sr.. From 1940 through 1949, Maitlands Post Office served as an important link between Maitland residents and Miami-Dade County residents serving within Florida's 9th congressional district; many mail items were sent there such as passports or driver's licenses that were needed to vote inside county limits while living elsewhere within Florida.
