Maitland is a small town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the Seminole word "mai-tada," meaning "place by the sea." The first European to visit Maitland was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it Fort Caroline after his ship, the Caronte. The local Indians called it Pahitanocka because of its great size and resources. In 1692, Major George Monck founded a military post here and named it Fort Monck after himself. After America gained independence from Great Britain in 1776, Maitland became part of newly created Florida Territory. It throve as an agricultural center during much of this time but also experienced significant development due to its proximity to Tampa Bay and other major waterways. In 1838, Maitland's first school opened; it was a one-room sod building on Broward Boulevard near today's courthouse square. That same year saw the arrival of Judge John Treadway who redefined law in Lee County through his actions such as issuing Writs of Habeas Corpus (legal orders ordering slaves kept under close watch). In 1839 he built phase two of what we now know as Treadway Square—the only public square in Lee County that still remains largely unchanged since those days! Judge Treadway is buried there along with many others who made their mark on our community during that time period including Augustus Witherspoon (founder of Jacksonville), Edwin Forrest (founder of Gainesville), Jno Crain (politician) and Elisha Whitehead (builder). During Reconstruction following the Civil War, things changed for Maitland when cotton began becoming more widely available across America thanks to advances in transportation technology such as railroads and canals. By 1885, many businesses had opened up here including groceries stores like Woolworth’s and druggists like Drury & Co., making it one of America’s most vibrant commercial districts at that time! As industry diversified so did Maitland’s economy which led to increased population growth over time culminating in its current stature as a thriving city today!

Maitland is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,475 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded by General James Maitland on November 10, 1820 as a station on the Great Miami Railroad. After Maitland's death in 1829, his wife and daughter took over the business and named it after him. In 1830, General Maitland's son-in-law Captain John Capps settled in Maitland and began to trade goods with Indians near what is now Clearwater Beach. In 1835, European Americans started to arrive in large numbers in Polk County and around Tampa Bay; they brought their livestock and crops with them. They soon realized that they needed a place to graze their animals so they developed several towns around Tampa Bay: St Pete (1836), Temple (1838), Clearwater Beach (1840), Winter Garden (1841), Dunedin (1843) and Hillsborough (1846). The arrival of these new settlers created tension between the native Seminole people who lived nearby and those coming from Europe. A series of wars followed between American Indian nations and white settlers over land rights; during this time period Maitland became known as "the Violence Settlement." In 1861, due to an increase in cotton production in Alabama, Congress passed the Land Act which granted alluvial soils along riverside areas above Mobile Bay to farmers for cultivation without giving any consideration to Native Americans living there already. This act led directly to the displacement of Native American tribes from their traditional lands throughout much of Florida including Maitlands – until finally being extinguished by federal legislation in 1893 through Treaty #8 signed by President Grover Cleveland with Chief Ocala negotiator Major George Biddle Jones. During World War II many military installations were built within or close to Maitlands boundaries including Camp Hurlbut which encompassed most of present day Clearwater Beach., Fort Brooke which housed radar equipment used for antisubmarine warfare operations off North coast of Florida., Naval Air Station Miramar which housed Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes used during WWII., Guantanamo Bay Site where prisoners were held before being transferred back home., etc.. Today much of what once stood here has been replaced by businesses such as Walmart store located on current site thenClearwater Boulevard past high school was replaced by Allstate Arena
In 1836, Maitland was founded by Captain John C. Maitland as a citrus plantation and cattle ranch. The area became an important center for cotton production in the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its fertile soil, low population density, and access to water resources. In 1935, Maitland was annexed by Gainesville Township.
