Maitland is a town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Maitland was founded on October 6, 1892 by John H. Maitland and his wife Jennie Bigham.
Maitland was first named "Emmonsville" after Emmons Township in Adams County, Pennsylvania. A post office called "Maitland" was established in 1894, and the name was changed to its current form on October 6, 1892. The town began as a small community near present-day Jacksonville with only a few homes and a store. In 1902, J.P. Morgan donated land to the town for an agricultural college which would become Jacksonville State College (later Florida State University).
The original courthouse building still stands today and is used as the Town Hall Museum of Duval County government. In 1924 it served as the home of Duval County Commissioner John Sisto until he moved to Tallahassee in 1935. It also served as the house where President Franklin D Roosevelt delivered his famous radio address from Hyde Park Corner on April 14th, 1938 during his campaign for re-election as president that year.
The next year saw another important event when Maitland became home to one of America's first aviation museums when Comanche Airlines opened its hangar there in 1936.
