Maitland is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,689 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville-St Petersburg-Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Maitland is located on Floridas Panhandle about 30 miles east of Tampa. Maitland first emerged as a community in 1892 when its three brothers built a log cabin on the banks of the Kissimmee River. The community grew rapidly during World War I when many soldiers from nearby Fort Myers and Pinellas County moved to Maitland to work in munitions plants and elsewhere in the war effort. In 1927, Maitland became an incorporated city with a mayor and council system; it had no school district until 1959 when it joined Pinellas County School District No. 5. In 1973, after years of discussion and planning by Mayor John Fenton and City Council members Dick Smith and Jay Beasley, Maitland annexed neighboring unincorporated areas of Spring Hill Township including present-day Miramar Estates (later renamed Monterey Park) to form what would become one of South Florida's largest annexation districts ever – larger even than Miami or Ft Lauderdale! The annexation created new neighborhoods such as Deerfield Village (now part of Plantation), Sunnyside Gardens (now part of Auburndale), Sunrise Hills, Willowbrook Ridge, Highlands Ranch Lakeshore III (now part of Lake Worth), Belleair Landing II (now part of Weston Village) and more – all characterized by their stylish Queen Anne Victorian houses with manicured gardens that were once home to wealthy cotton merchants from nearby Fort Myers and Clearwater.[1][2] To this day you can find original plantation homes still standing throughout much portions of Maitlands annexed area including Sunnyside Gardens where today’s owners include descendants[3]. Today’sMayor Fenton has stated that he always wanted to annex Sunnyside Gardens because “It was just perfect for our purpose: We wanted our own little enclave within our own municipality” while also adding that annexation increased business opportunities for local businesses which now have access to better transportation options than they did before while also increasing property values significantly![4] While annexation has caused some controversy over how much land should be annexed versus remaining rural or unincorporated status quo,[5] overall it has been seen as an effective way for cities like Maitlanders grow without having to go through county government or school district boundaries; additionally annexing smaller communities allows for greater creativity when developing policies towards public infrastructure such as schools or other economic development initiatives!

Maitland is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Maitland was founded in 1839 by John A. Maitland and his family. The first masonry house in Maitland was built by John A. Maitland on North Main Street in 1839. The first post office in Maitland was established in 1841, and the first store was opened by Wm Hartsfield Jr. In 1865, Colonel Samuel Prentice built a mansion called "Prentice's Castle." In 1893, the name of the town changed from Maitland to Palm Beach after it became one of three towns (the other two being Winter Garden and Boynton Beach) within Palm Beach County that year as a result of an act of Congress known as the city Beautiful Movement. Maitlands early business opportunities were based on its location between Daytona Beach and West Palm Beach on Biscayne Bay; however, with trade expanding to Fort Myers and Naples during this time period, tourism began to take center stage as well and today is one of Palm Beaches most dominant industries while still maintaining close cultural ties with its historic namesake town
