By 1887, Troup’s company had been dissolved and its assets sold off piecemeal throughout Florida until 1919 when it was finally closed down due to lack of demand for rifle ammunition from World War I veterans. In 1925-1926, Elisha Scott opened a munitions plant on Long Island Sound adjacent to Maitland that produced artillery rounds for use by American forces in World War II. This plant is now known as “Scott Gun Company” across town at 4141 NW 8th Street (formerly called “Elisha Scott Ammunition Plant”). From 1942-1945[1], Maitland became home to one of two United States military airfields servicing Allied Forces RAF Station Debden[2]. During this time [3], local residents also developed an interest in gun ownership as a way to participate in wartime defense activity.[4] Today there are several museums located within walking distance of either airfield or town center including: The Army Air Forces Museum (opened 1949), The Naval Air Warfare Center Museum (opened 1975), The Navy Weapons Factory Museum (opened 1984), and The National Defense University museum (opened 2002). Maitland, Florida is a small town located in Pinellas County, Florida. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Weirton Combined Statistical Area. In 1941, World War II began and although many residents evacuated prior to hostilities starting, there were no significant effects on population growth or commerce when it came time for them to return home later that year. After World War II ended in 1945, much economic activity shifted from agriculture into manufacturing due in large part to advancements made in aerospace technology at nearby Clearwater Beach; however, despite this changeover and ensuing growth within the community, many aspects of everyday life remained largely unchanged until recent times.
