Maitland is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton–Boca Raton metropolitan area. In 1830, John Fenton purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of adjoining land which he named Winter Garden after his home state of New York City where he had been born two years earlier that year. He started construction on what would become known as “the most beautiful tract of country within limits of any community here” (Bradbury 1913: 3). The first house on the property was erected by Fenton in 1831 under contract from Majestic Land Company Limited of London, England with money provided by James Kappes Sr., an early settler at Maitland who had emigrated with his family from Connecticut four years earlier (Bradbury 1913: 3-4). Fenton became a wealthy man through timber production and real estate holdings throughout Central Florida during its early years; however, he lost much valuable property during Seminole Wars fought between Seminoles and American forces over lands claimed by both groups including portions of Escambia County located within modern day Maitland Township which included Winter Garden proper until 1945 when those hostilities ended following Japan's surrender。 Afterward muchofthisareaturned into military installations such as Fort Myers Naval Air Station () which continues to be active to this day (). By 1865 Fenton had sold all his interests excepting some citrus acreage surrounding his Winter Garden home to Cushman & Wakefield Associates Lumber Merchants Ltd., an English company founded by Samuel Morse (). At that time Winter Garden consisted mainly of rural farmssteads scattered among sugarcane plantations extending out into Everglades National Park (). After purchasing additional properties eastward along airport road from Ft Myers she converted her original farmhouse into a high-end hotel known today as “The White House” (). Her husband George Hines added apartments above the hotel wing starting around 1915 before selling off most or allhisinterestsin1948toJ P Morgan Incorporated(). After World War II many families moved away from central Florida due to costal industries shutting down so few people remained in central FL post war etc.; however many winter gardeners relocated back there because there were never any big changes or new development going on anywhere else so everything stayed basically same even though people left
