He sold his land to the state for $1 million in 1907. In 1913, Maitland's post office opened and remained open until 1974 when it became part of Tampa. It was during World War II that Maitland went through its most dramatic transformation; it became an important supply center for the war effort because of its location near Tampa Bay and its abundant phosphate resources. After the war ended, businesses closed down and many people left town; however, new residents soon started moving into Maitland and it has since regained some prosperity from its former wartime status. Today, there are several businesses that have been established in Maitland over the years such as Applebee's restaurant which opened in 1978 and currently offers a full menu including military discounts; The Dog House bar & grill which opened on July 4th 2002 ; PGA Tour golf course located next door to Gulfstream Park also known as Pinehurst Resort & Casino which provides multiple courses for play within minutes' drive; along with several smaller stores including JCPenney's store (opened in 1984) as well as numerous restaurants all catering to local cuisine like Old Key Lime Pie from Stonington's Pie Shack & ice cream Parlor from Joe Gibbs Dairy (opened 1981). The area has seen significant development over time with more than 10 housing developments popping up around town over the last few decades alone- this growth has helped contribute to a population increase of almost 20% between 2000 and 2010! Additionally, there are now plans underway to develop an apartment complex called "Town Center" just off I-75 southeast of downtown which would include more than 350 apartments - this addition would put a strong emphasis on job creation within this already attractive community!
