Maitland is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,922 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Maitland" derives from the Micmac word "mahtland," meaning "terrain rich in fruit trees." The first European settlers to Maitland were Captain John Smith and his men who arrived on July 14, 1613, during the early stages of English colonization of Florida. They named their new settlement after Lord Auckland's manor house in New Zealand. Maitland post office was established in 1835 and continued operation until 1959. In 1892 J.P. Morgan bought land east of town and built what would become Morgan Park Golf Course (now Pinehurst Resort). He also founded Maitland Academy which became one of America's leading high schools for girls and remains so today. For many years, the Maitlands hosted the annual Sarasota-Bradenton Open Championship golf event which drew some of America's best golfer including Retief Goosen, Gene Sarazen and Byron Nelson amongst others. In 1960 MaitLAND saw its first television show when WFLA-TV began broadcasting a half hour program called "Miltown". That same year WFLA moved to studios on University Boulevard across from Town Hall where they continue to air their programming today! In 1961 a new high school was built with then Superintendent Driscoll as its headteacher followed by Mrs Ford who served until 1985 when she retired after 30 years teaching here! In 1775, the British conquered Fort Meade and took over the area that includes today's Maitland. The British built a small fort here in 1778 called Fort George Williams after their general who had been killed in battle near Fort Caroline on Lake Erie two years earlier. After France regained control of North America in 1783, they began building permanent settlements here including Stonington (later known as Jacksonville) east of present day Maitland and West Palm Beach on Jupiter Bayou south of today's town center. In 1821, General James H. Maitland joined forces with Captain Thomas Posey to capture Indian Town along Jupiter River which was then under Spanish rule but became part of American territory following the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolutionary War that year. On Aug 25, 1824, he married Maria Juana de la Cruz y Pardo (née de la Vega), daughter of Don José Antonio Pardo y Velasco-Hernandez and sister-in-law to Governor Manuel Ruiz de Santa Anna *. She was one of six women chosen by President James Ketchum to travel with him on his official visit to Mexico City* on Feb 1st,-1825.* On July 3rd 1840 *Maitland’s father* died suddenly when he was just 27 years old while serving as Lieutenant Colonel commanding Volunteers Militia District 2 at White Sands Apache Rancho Presidio southeast of present day Tampa*. His wife succeeded him as Mrs James Henton (*Martha Elizabeth*) Maitland.* After Mexican independence came about in 1917*, all privately owned land north or west of US Highway 41 between Hillsborough Boulevard & US Highway 301 became part of public lands administered by USDA through NPS/USFWS programs called “Gulf Coast Ranches” which included much present day Maitland within their boundaries.* This comprehensive land survey established an approximate grid system for managing these lands which remains essentially unchanged today*. From this time until 1959 when military use transitioned full time into government hands following World War II*, parcels designated for agricultural purposes such as citrus groves and cattle pastures were enclosed within walls or fences** used mainly for stock raising rather than development because it would have posed a threat to future military installations being constructed nearby like Ft Myers Army Airfield.* These enclosures continued until 1973 when there was an attempt by developers interested in creating golf courses [*see photo left] adjacent to what is now I-4*and interchanges with I-10*** led by developer Ray Ellis*** resulted in protests from residents who felt they were being traded away piecemeal** resulting eventually in Ellis withdrawing his plans† *. As it stands currently there are no physical barriers remaining between private property adjacent to Ft Myers airport &MátLAND* although access has been limited recently due to concerns about potential impacts from growth around airport.* As mentioned before most early settler families lived along river valleys where water transportation was available for goods both fresh and salt water(* trade routes crossed inland rivers often leading into Mobile Bay*) while others developed agriculture or ranching activities near major roads.(present day I-4 & Hillsborough Boulevard) reaching out into surrounding counties such as Polk *and also Volusia *whose residents benefited economically from shipping activity brought forward by Gulf Shipbuilding Corporation located just east side OF town.) A few notable family names include: De Witt[?], Laughlin[?], Woodruff[?], Barkley,[?], Rankin,[?] etc…. Today many descendants live scattered throughout southern Florida including parts Of Georgia*, Texas*, Louisiana*, Alabama* among others! Maitland was first settled in 1836 by the MacKenzie family. The town was named for General David MacKenzie, who fought in the Mexican-American War. After the war, Maitland grew rapidly as a result of its strategic location on the Intracoastal Waterway and its access to raw materials from upstate New York. By 1860, Maitland had a population of 375 people. In 1886, Maitland became an incorporated town after voters approved a referendum question asking if they wanted to be part of Jacksonville County.
