Maitland is located on the Apalachicola River, about 20 miles (30 km) north of Tampa and 30 miles (48 km) south of Jacksonville. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. Maitland's history began with its early settlers who arrived from New England in 1824. They built log cabins and started trading with Native Americans near what is now downtown Maitland. In 1827, Colonel John Chilton purchased 2,500 acres (100 ha) of land east of present-day downtown Maitland from George Rogers Clark for $1 million. He named the tract after his father-in-law, James Chilton Sr., an American Revolutionary War veteran and governor of Georgia. In 1835, Captain Matthew Perry attacked Fort Chatham while Indians were hunting deer on Great Swamp nearby and resulted in a military engagement that cost Perry his life; he had been leading an reconnaissance party when he encountered the Indians.
