It was then that United Technologies Corporation became known as American Outdoor Brands Incorporated. Maitland was founded in 1836 by John Maitland and his family. A post office called Maitland was established in 1837, and remained in operation until 1914. The town became a village in 1917, and then a city in 1963. On November 15, 2006, Maitland passed an ordinance to join the United States as a state. There are no colleges or universities located within Maitland but nearby Hillsborough State University offers degrees leading up to college level programs which can be accessed throughout much of Florida. Maitland, Florida was founded in 1821 by James Maitland and his wife Eliza. The town became an important stop on the African-American slave trade. In 1865, after the Civil War, Maitland was renamed Jacksonville after General John J. Dix.
