A new shopping mall called "Mayfield"opened adjacent to downtown on May 15, 2006; it replaced an older mall that had been closed down by fire two years earlier after being condemned by a judge due to safety concerns. The new mall included several restaurants and movie theaters as well as a single floor of shopsaver stores which were designed by Chase Manhattan Bank. In 2018, Mayfield Mall announced plans to close all but six of its stores effective September 15th due to low occupancy levels from shoppers who have abandoned malls during the recession. On October 5th Maitland Mayor Rick Story announced they will start marketing the site online starting November 1st so people can find other places to shop before they leave. As of 2019 there are only 3 remaining stores left at Mayfield Mall

Maitland was founded in 1824 by Major James Maitland, a British military officer. The town grew rapidly and soon became an important center for trade and industry. In 1846, the area was annexed by Gainesville, Florida, making Maitland the first town in Florida to be annexation-ed. The town continued to grow and become a major center for education and culture. In 1907, Maitland was renamed Fort Lauderdale after the city's mayor, Hernando de Soto.
