Lynn Haven is a small town in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Pasco Metropolitan Statistical Area. Firearms manufacturing and trade took place in Lynn Haven until around 1920 when it stopped due to prohibition in the United States. The first handgun made in America was made here by George Hill and his son-in-law Samuel Colt in 1847. Ammunition production began here as early as 1868 and firearms starting being made for export soon after that. In 1921, Prohibition ended in the United States and gun manufacture recommenced with a new group of manufacturers under license from the government. The industry quickly became saturated with Americanmade products and many companies went out of business including Smith & Wesson which had been making revolvers since 1887. However, some local companies such as H&R Block continued to produce firearms until about 1930 when all handguns were banned by Florida state law due to fears of possible regulation from other states that had repealed prohibition laws. Today, only shotguns are still produced in Lynn Haven although there has been talk of resurrecting the pistol industry here as well (although this has not yet happened). Lynn Haven is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico and was founded by the Coast Guard in 1903. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. The town was named for Lynnhaven Beach on the mouth of Big Cypress Creek, about northwest of where it now stands. The first white person to live in what is now Lynn Haven was James Sowers, who arrived with his family from Maryland in 1853. By 1857, all but one member of the Sowers family had died from measles brought over by American Indians into what is now Polk County during a period of epidemic violence called "the Great Miami Swamp Famine." In 1903, Congress passed an act authorizing the Coast Guard to establish piers at various points along Florida's south coast for docking ships carrying goods between Tampa and Jacksonville. The first pier at Lynnhaven was built in 1905 and became known as Pier 9. In 1912, another pier followed--Pier 2--and eventually all five were built together as Pier 15(). The area that would become Lynn Haven was surveyed by Captain John Husted (1861-1948) aboard USS Pqueen when he traveled along that portion of Florida's west coast during Key West's heyday as part of Operation Highjump (1946). After surveying most of present-day Polk County and northern Sarasota County he selected this location for his future community based on its excellent water supply potential (it still has freshwater access), good accessibility to shipping lanes and wide open space available for development. A post office called Lynnhaven opened in 1907 and remained in operation until 1951; its ZIP code then was 82734 (). Today only remains from this time are some foundations which may date back to 1906 or 1907: warship moorings off Point Milligan near today's harbor entrance will show evidence matching both years; however their precise dating cannot be confirmed without further examination/testing.. On July 25th 1902 residents voted 3-to-1 against annexation by Hillsborough Township due to concerns about water supplies not being adequate enough to support such a large town; however annexation did take place on August 12th 1902 after much discussion among local officials including then Mayor JT Donelson who testified before a congressional subcommittee that 'Our ocean resources will never allow us ever to curtail our growth'. A new borough named Parkland also formed out side Hillsborough Township soon afterwards with similar concerns about lack of water supply.
