The fort was abandoned after its garrison were evacuated to Pensacola following an attack by Seminole Indians. The first store opened in 1850 and it was called the Goudreau Store. In 1853,Captain Fenton donated land to build a school which became known as Lynnhaven School District #1A. In 1899,the town property was annexed by Jacksonville and the school district disbanded; however, since then, Lynnhaven has had its own school system run by an elected board of trustees with 4 members appointed by Mayor David Price. In 1905, Captain Fenton donated land for a Baptist church which became known as First Baptist Church of Lynn Haven; later that year it merged into First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville. On October 1st 1909, Hurricane Wilma passed through the Pinellas County area and destroyed much of Gainesville including Lynnhaven along with other towns within striking distance. As a result of this Catastrophe many businesses closed their doors for fear of becoming damaged or lost irreparably if they were caught outside during the storm surge created by Wilma's winds and floods Since then many new businesses have come into operation such as KFC (later renamed Kentucky Fried Chicken), Lowe's Home Hardware & Electronics chain stores as well as numerous restaurants including Pizza Hut (now Papa John's Pizza), Baskin Robbins cafes and Dunkin Donuts locations acrosstown from downtown Jacksonville Only two homes remain standing from when Captain James Fenton founded Lynn Haven: One is now used as office space for various businesses in downtown Jacksonville while the other functions as a museum dedicated toCaptain Fenton's hometown values- namely community service flood restoration work done throughout Polk County following Hurricanes Irma/Wilma Additionally there are several golf courses located throughoutthe town with both public and private holes available
