The first permanent European settlement in the area was on Longwood Key, which is now in Jacksonville, Florida. A group of English whalers named John Fitch and his brother Nicholas landed on the key in 1795 and founded a small trading post. In 1801, Fort Fitch was built to protect the key from pirates. The fort was abandoned in 1815 and fell into disrepair. In 1834, a group of Scottish settlers named John Bruce built a small house at Longwood Key. The Bruce family continued to live there until they moved to Scotland in 1916.
