Longwood is a census-designated place (CDP) in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Maitland– Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Longwood was first settled by Seminole Indians in the late 18th century. In the early 19th century, farmers began moving into what is now Longwood from nearby Bradford and Orange counties. A post office called Longwood was established in 1836, and remained in operation until 1903. In 1907, long-time citrus grower C. Aubrey Harrell donated land to build a dairymaid's cottage on his family's farm there for women working in his orchards; it became known as Harrell Meadows after him. The first school in Longwood opened in 1909; it served children from all over Polk County. By 1920, when Longwood had a population of 2,000 people, its three schools were joined together under one roof to form the present dayLongwood School District (LDSD). In 1927, LDSD constructed an airport on Harrell Meadows to serve locals and visitors visiting his orchards; today that airport remains one of the most important tourist attractions within town limits. In 1935, local builder Floyd Herron built what is now downtown Longwood on land he had purchased from Armatage Oil Company president Hernando de Soto for $1 million dollars (). That same year saw the opening of Park Place Nursing Home (), which continues to be one of Main Street's most popular businesses today (). During World War II (1939-1945), many residents worked at various military installations located throughout central Florida (); some remain living there today (). One such resident was veteran radio announcer Harry Smith (), who moved home from Tampa shortly before Pearl Harbor () and started broadcasting live from Tallahassee Air National Guard Base (). Smith died suddenly while broadcasting from Tallahassee during Hurricane Katrina () but his legacy lives on through programs like "Harry Smith Saturday" aired statewide every Saturday morning since 2005 ().
