Longwood is a town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,454 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by couple who named it after their longboat docked there on Longboat Key in 1795. In 1801 the area was annexed by St. Petersburg and renamed after that city; Longwood became an incorporated community in 1907. The post office moved to its current location in 1924 from Point Clear on Longboat Key. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,361 people, 498 households, and 353 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,569 persons per square mile (1,028/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96% white (non-Hispanic), 0% black or African American, 2% Native American, 0% Asian Pacific Islander , 2% from other races*, 0% from two or more races*, and 2% from two or more races and Hispanic or Latino of any race* . There are many Longwood, Florida history stories that date back to before the area was even settled. One of the earliest references to Longwood is from an 1828 map of Gainesville County which shows a small village called "Longwood." The name was likely given to the spot because it was located on a long wooded peninsula in what is now Gainesville. In 1841, Laurence Fenton bought land located today within the boundaries of Longwood. The first settler in what is now Longwood was George Troup who arrived in1841 and named his land Baldwin's Prairie after his brother-in-law, John Baldwin. While Baldwin's Prairie was initially just a swamp, over time it became home to various businesses and homes including a gristmill, sawmill and blacksmith shop. In 1847, when James Wistar arrived in Gainesville he set up shop near where Gatorade Park now stands. In 1850, Wistar built another business – The Floridian – at 4th Street and Highland Avenue. By this time, there were already several small towns around Gainesville with names like Altamonte Springs (1851), Dunnellon (1852),Winter Garden (1853) and Auburndale (1855). The growth of Longwood continued unabated through the years as different businesses sprang up and people moved into the area. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in what is now Longwood Township on 695 acres of forestland west of Gainesville Boulevard. It wasn't until 1861 that railroads started coming through Gainesville County so things began to change for the better for Longwood residents. That year saw the opening of The Florida Central Railroad which brought jobs and lots of new residents to town along with improved transportation options such as trains running between Jacksonville and Gainesville daily! During these early years, many schools were also founded in Short Hills Elementary School east of downtown Gainesville along High Street between Polk Road and Carver Road; Stonington Bible School west of downtown; First Presbyterian Church east side street between 3rd Street & 4th Street; Methodist Episcopal Church east side street between 2nd & 3rd Streets; Baptist Churches north side street between 1st & 2nd Streets; Grange Hall on Old Courthouse Square northeast corner Third Street & Union Avenue served by benevolent societies such as Ladies Aid Society - Female Employees Association - Good Templars Ancient Order Of Freemasons - Knights Templar
