In the early 1800s, Longwood was a small town in southwest Florida. It was known for its palm trees and orange groves. The town had a population of about 150 people in 1819 when it became part of the United States. In 1850, Longwood became the county seat of Broward County and saw an increase in population to 1,500 people by 1860. The growth continued through the years until it reached 3,000 residents by 1900. They established themselves on the west side of Lake Miccosukee near present day intersection of US-4 and SR-2 (now US-29). There were only three houses but they were worth $3 each when they were built which suggests that there must have been some kind of trade or industry involved because today’s economy drives much development within walking distance of downtown Longwood! In 1854, due to an overpopulated area and lack of farming land available, Captain John Ahern erected a log cabin on current site of downtown – this was one the first homes in what is now known as Downtown Longwood! On January 1st 1860, Captain John Ahern married Sarah Jane Pace and moved into his home which still stands today at 309 Park Ave., becoming one of the original pioneers who resided in what would become called “DowntownLongwood”! On October 15th 1861, during Seminole Wars between Seminoles and settlers from North America (USA), two cannons shot off from Fort Gibson across Orange River at what is now DowntownLongwood leading to speculation that Native Americans had fired on American forces! Sarah Jane Ahern died on July 16th 1865 at age 47 due to fever contracted while caring for her husbands young son Bartram Ahern who also died soon after birth! His father then took over care for Bartrams brother Sammie until he too reached adulthood… Sammie later married Female Davis so she could take care for him full time when he turned 21 years old!!! Captain James & Mrs Rachel's oldest son Bartram born Dec 4th 1865; died March 24th 1902 aged 62 yrs old!!!!!!!!!!!!! This 3rd generation LONGWOOD resident: Bartram HARRISON
