In 1892, the Longwood rifle factory was founded in Longwood by Augustus M. Kelley and James P. Brownell. The factory produced rifles for the Confederate army during the American Civil War. The company continued to produce firearms after the war until it closed in 1923. In 1933, a group of businessmen led by J.J. McNaught bought the Longwood rifle factory and began producing pistols there as well. From 1933 to 1941, McNaught also ran the company’s ammunition business from its Longwood Arsenal store. In 1830 John Longworth erected a large frame mansion on what is now Broadwalk Boulevard in Longwood. This house served as both headquarters for the club and as an occasional venue for public shootings. By 1840, John Longworth had become one of central Florida's most powerful men and had developed a significant firearms industry within his community.

The Longwoods are buried there near their husbands. The city was established as a town in 1907 by combining parts of West Palm Beach and Worthville Township. On December 15, 1912, it became a city with a population of 507 residents when it annexed parts of Palm Beach Gardens and Mandeville Township
