Gun targets have been a part of Longwood's history for over 100 years. The first target guns were brought to the town in 1892 by a group of men who had purchased land in the area. The guns were used for hunting and target shooting, and soon became popular among the local populace. Today, gun targets are still common in Longwood, and are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. The popularity of target shooting has led to the development of many different types of targets, both small and large. Some of the most well-known target ranges in Longwood include The Meadows Shooting Club, which is home to some of the largest gun targets in Florida; The Lighthouse Shooting Gallery; and The Range at Pinecrest Golf Course. These ranges provide customers with an opportunity to shoot many different kinds of targets from a variety of distances. Gun targets have also been used as teaching tools for children throughout Longwood's history. Many schools across Longwood have taken advantage of this opportunity by hosting Target shoots during school periods. This allows students from all ages to experiencetargeting firsthand. Longwood is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 26,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city's economy is focused on agriculture and tourism. The first Europeans to visit Longwood were Dutch traders in 1608, who named it "Wallemande". A small Indian village was established near present-day Longwood in 1785 by Captain John Smith and his party during their exploration of the Florida region. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson landed at Fort Brooke on Lake George and discovered what would become Longwood while surveying the area for a plantation project. In 1829, Colonel James Gadsden founded Gadsden Plantation on land that he had purchased from the Seminole tribe of Indians near present-day Tallahassee. The Gadsden heirs developed much of present day Longwood into one of America's largest cotton plantations—the most successful slaveholding society in history. After emancipation in 1865, some former slaves moved into Longwood to help rebuild its cotton industry following Reconstruction; however many white residents continued to reside there until after World War II when all white residents left for various reasons including integration into newly formed Broward County municipalities or because they became citizens of nearby jurisdictions such as Miami or Tampa Bay Area cities like St Petersburg or Tampa

Longwood, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 3,871 at the 2010 census. Longwood is the seat of Polk County. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The town was founded by General James Long and his wife Emmeline on December 12, 1835 as a military post near what is now Lake Worth. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location midway between Tampa and St Petersburg on the Gulf of Mexico and its abundance of phosphate resources which made it an important stop on the Overseas Railroad. In 1853, Longwood became a county seat after becoming part of Seminole County. In 1907, Longwood annexed much of neighboring Clearwater Township to form a new city limits with a population of 11,000 people known as Clearwater Prairie. In 1917, when Tampa was created as an independent city under state law and then again in 1928 when it became a municipal corporation under state law, Clearwater Prairie was transferred from Polk County to Hillsborough County for economic reasons but remained within City limits until 1959 when it reverted back to Polk County status and finally joined Hillsborough in 1963 as part of the merged city/county boundaries. As part of this change over time many businesses closed or changed their names such as Mrs Kapp's Bakery (now Hooters) which originally opened in 1912; Joe's Grocery which first opened in 1924; Daily News Paper Store; First National Bank (1927); American Legion Post #2 (1928); IHOP restaurant (now Burger King) which opened in 1955; Midway Airport Authority hangar (#1) (1965), and several other businesses that are no longer open today including Jardine's department store which first opened in 1912; Arboretum & Botanical Garden built in 1927; Nursing Home built 1935-1950s; WPTV news station building completed 1957-1960s complete with tower used for TV broadcast from 1962 until 1978 when it moved out to Channel 5 Tower across from Bayfront Park before being taken down during Hurricane Catty 1980s Banks: First National Bank - 1927 American Legion Post #2 - 1928 IHOP restaurant - 1955 Midway Airport Authority hangar (#1) - 1965
In 1864, the Longwood Railroad was extended to this area. In 1870, a post office was established at Longwood. In 1889, the town of Longwood was organized. The first mayor and council were chosen in 1890. The first school was built in 1898. In 1907, the Longwood-Everett School District became one of the first school districts in Florida to be created by act of Congress.
