Longwood is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by General James Long and his family as a Loyalist community on the east side of what is now Fort Orange Boulevard. In 1840, it became an incorporated municipality and soon developed into a popular tourist destination due to its natural beauty and well-preserved historical sites. Today, Longwood remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in central Florida with over 3 million visitors each year. One of the earliest attractions in Longwood was its large tract of forest that served as a hunting ground for Native Americans until it was burned by British troops during Indian Wars in 1763. The area now known as Longwood had been settled by white people since prior to that time. In 1836, General James Long purchased some land from the Seminole Indians and began developing it into a small town named after him called "Long's Town". The first house built in what is now Longwood was constructed by general John Calkins in 1841. By 1850, when railroad construction started through Polk County, there were only three houses left standing in downtown Longwood; all were used as hotel rooms or residences for local residents during this time period. In 1865, when Jacksonville opened up new territory west of Lake Okeechobee andLongwood became part of Jacksonville proper; however, both towns continued to operate under their own municipal laws until 1889 when they were united under one common law system statewide (this law included all counties within Florida). In 1939, following World War II which created vast numbers of jobs throughout Central Florida region (due largely to military production), citizens organized themselves into committees to develop plans for re-establishment of downtown businesses and revival efforts including renovating storefronts along Ft Orange Boulevard – thereafter known as “The Streetcar Days” celebration program which lasted six weeks and attracted over 1 million visitors annually during that era! After Hurricane Andrew destroyed much property within Downtown Jacksonville – including most original structures such as City Hall – restoration work commenced immediately with funds provided by private individuals/ foundations/joint ventures between locals & visiting dignitaries who traveled throughout southern FL (& Orlando) taking photos & videos chronicling various aspects via social media websites like Facebook & Twitter! Longwood is a small town in Polk County, Florida, on the Panhandle. It was founded in 1849 by Captain John Long and his family. The town was named for General James Long, who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1892, the United States Postal Service moved its post office from Jacksonville to Longwood. In 1925, the first high school in Longwood opened. In 1949, the first shopping mall in Gulfport was built adjacent to Longwood High School. On July 4, 2006, a tornado touched down near Longwood and damaged over ninety homes and businesses before dissipating just minutes later. For many years, it has been one of the most Tornado-affected areas in Florida; between 1950 and 2006 there were six tornadoes within ten miles of Longwood
Longwood was founded in 1837 by Capt. James Long and his wife, Martha. The town was named for the longwoods that abounded in the area. The first post office was established in 1838. By 1840, Longwood had a small population of about 50 people. In 1861, the first school was built, and by 1865, there were five schools in Longwood. In 1872, Captain John Witherspoon donated land to the town for a courthouse and jail. In 1886, Longwood became a city with its own government and mayor. The first building built in downtown Longwood was the Post Office Building which still stands today on Main Street. In 1897-98, an electric light plant was built on part of the old Civil War army fort at Fort Walton Beach as part of an effort to bring more industry to the town center. The plant initially produced lights for homes but soon grew into a large commercial institution with over 100 employees when it became known as “The Plant” or simply “The Plant” after that time until it closed down in 1984 due to economic constraints within Florida utilities industry). In 1932-33, construction began on what is now called "the longest continuous Public House Chain" west of Tampa Bay - 10 miles (16 km) of chain restaurants! With each restaurant being unique and serving different types of cuisine from around the world (think Chinese food chains found only east of Tampa Bay), it is considered one of Florida's classic tourist attractions today!
