In 1892, the Longwood Rifle and Pistol Club was formed in Longwood, Florida. The club enjoyed membership for many years before disbanding in 1916. The rifle and pistol clubs of America were created in 1892 by a group of NRA members who wanted to preserve the traditions of muzzleloader shooting and pistols. It was not until 1922 that the first NRA-sponsored International Muzzleloading Gun Championship took place at Belle Isle Island, Michigan. At this event, several European shooters competed against American shooters with both types of guns. In 1934, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) was founded as an organization responsible for preserving gun rights around the world. This group supported various events associated with muzzleloader shooting including international championships held at Belle Isle Island as well as creating rules for major rifle matches around the world. The Second World War interrupted these activities but resumed shortly after hostilities ended in 1945. With new equipment available and interest in muzzleloader shooting growing again, NSSF began sponsoring international championships once again beginning in 1948. These competitions have continued every year since then with some exceptions due to natural disasters or changes within NSSF policy. Today, muzzleloader shooters from all over the world participate in NRA-sponsored international championships which are conducted on various sites around the world each year. In 1896, the Longwoods built a frame schoolhouse which they used until 1907 when they moved to a more permanent brick building which still stands today. In 1916, Lumberman George Aiken donated land to build an Agricultural Experiment Station (AES). The AES became known as Longwood University in 1925 and began granting degrees in agriculture and sciences. In 1960, Longwood's first high school opened for students grades 9 through 12 under the name of Broward High School; it later became known asBroward Middle School and then Broward High School again before finally becoming Longwood University Prep School in 2003. Four years later, Hurricane Floyd struck Florida causing extensive damage to homes and businesses within Longwood limits; however, no injuries or fatalities occurred as a result of Floyd specifically within Polk County . In 1853, the first white settlers arrived in Longwood. At that time, it was a small village of about eighty people. The first school was built in 1854 and the first store opened in 1856. The community grew rapidly and by 1860, there were over one hundred people living in Longwood. In 1865, Longwood became a town and soon after, a college was founded there. In 1906, the United States Postal Service moved its mail office from Jacksonville toLongwood and renamed it Post Office Park. In 1969, the college merged with Florida State University to form Tallahassee State University. Since then, Longwood has experienced many changes both spiritually and physically. A variety of businesses have been founded in the town including banks, retail stores, restaurants and more recently home builders. Many new homes have also been built in recent years which has helped contribute to increased population growth within the community.
