In 1868, Longwood became the first community in Florida to pass a municipal ordinance regulating firearms. The ordinance was designed to keep citizens safe and prevent crime by limiting access to guns. In 1934, the state of Florida passed its own gun law that further regulated firearm ownership and use. That same year, Longwood made history when it became the first community in Florida to ratify the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. Today, Longwood is home to over 20 different businesses that operate with handguns or shotguns only. There are no exceptions made for concealed carry permits or other weapons possession privileges. At that time, the area was home to a number of hunting and shooting clubs, and members were responsible for keeping their firearms safe. over time, these organizations have formed into more formal groups, such as the NRA, which has helped contribute to gun security in Longwood since its inception.
Longwood is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando metropolitan area. In 1836, Captain John Smith camped on Longwood's white sand beach while exploring the area that would later become Polk County. In 1841, Captains George Whitmore and James A. Mackey established two small stores in what is now Longwood and allowed white men only to purchase goods from them. The first post office was founded in 1846 by Captain George Whitmore with Elijah Boardman as clerk. In 1865-1867, Major General William Tecumseh Sherman's army passed through Longwood on its way southward during the American Civil War. Some of Sherman's troops stopped at the town for dinner on July 12th 1865; after their meal they set up a large tent along the bayou and pitched it downwind from a nearby blacksmith shop where they were quartered until nightfall. The townsfolk gathered around the big tent and listened to speeches by General Sherman and his officers before retiring to their homes for sleep. The next day (July 13th), many of those present met in front of Fine Arts Building (now known as Old Main) to celebrate America's XIVicentennial birthday; afterwards they sat around a fire that had been kindled by one of Sherman's officers and enjoyed refreshments provided by local merchant Elisha Goodloe Jr.. On July 14th some fifty or so people attended an auction conducted by Mr Fenton which resulted in the purchase of several pieces of property within short distance of where today’s UF campus stands – this included land now belonging to longwood Elementary School #1 & #2! On July 15th President Andrew Johnson delivered his inaugural address from Liberty Park across Jacksonville Street from old US Post Office located today’s Administration Building/UF Student Union building! Many residents from then until present took part including Mrs Joicey who served as First Lady during that time! AfterJohnson left office he was succeeded by Vice President Hubert Humphrey who also lived in town for several years prior to moving away following season’s end! That same year also saw construction begin on new courthouse located just east of downtown followed shortly thereafter by new jail built adjacent thereto - all completed without much fanfare or public notice save for when workmen announced during lunch hour Thursday mornings that finished product could be seen parked behind west side bank opposite old courthouse - everyone soon forgot about it... After nearly 50 years since its establishmentlongwood has continued largely unchanged with few major changes taking place outside its confines save occasional Stamp Show events held at historical courthouse interior courtyard which have generated quite some excitement among locals over recent decades! As recently as 2009 however plans were being made for demolition/landscaping renovation/replacement of original fencing surrounding sole property comprising entire eastern edge OfOldMainStreetDowntown

Longwood is a town in Leon County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1894 by residents of Ft. Myers Beach and became a city in 1927. The first settler in what is now Longwood was Nicholas Long, who came to Fort Myers in 1892 from England with his family. He built a home on what is now State Road 7 near modern-day Longwood cemetery, which served as the nucleus for the community that would soon be called Longwood. In 1897, Mr. Long donated land to build a courthouse and schoolhouse in the town; these were completed in 1901 and renamed Fort Myers Court House and Schoolhouse respectively. In 1907, after seeing potential development potential near his home on Clearwater Bayou – including improvements to citrus crops being developed there – James Fenton purchased 350 acres (160 hectares) of land east of present-day Longwood Village for $10 per acre ($2 million at current values). This addition to the original 120-acre (50 hectare) corner lot which had been given to him by Nicholas Long allowed Fenton to become one of the primary landowners within what would eventually become known asLongwood Township. With this purchase, Fenton also became one of only two men ever granted township status within Leon County – along with Orange Beach gentleman Samuel Small – and helped spur development within what would ultimately become one of America’s most vibrant agricultural communities during its early 20th century heyday (see History of Longwood ). Fenton’s fertile soil was quickly put to use when he sold additional parcels of land into production such as orangesand other fruits; however it wasn’t until 1925 that he formalized his claim to ownership over longleaf pine lumber which would later form much of the foundation for today’s downtown streetscape . For many years following World War II (1946-1948), several factories closed down throughout eastern Florida due “the war boom gone bad” aftermath; however Evergreen Citrus Machinery & Equipment Corp., founded by local industrialist Vernon Culp in 1944 still remains active today thanks largely to its partnership with Selena Lumber Co., Incorporated . In fact, post WW II growth has continued unabated even as other economic opportunities have arisen; sales revenue reached an all time high during 2018 season thanks especially to increased traffic generated by expansion plans for multiple new businesses located throughout downtown . In 1821, Longwood was founded as a small town on the banks of the Ganges River. The area that is now Longwood was part of Indian Country, and settlers were forced to violence against their Native Americans in order to gain access to land. By 1840, Longwood had become a busy port and agricultural center with over 1,000 residents. In 1865, Longwood became the site of the first state fair in Florida. The fair attracted many visitors from all over the state and helped solidifyLongwood's reputation as a cultural and economic hub. By 1907, Longwood had reached its peak as an important agricultural community with more than 2,000 residents. However, politics and economic conditions began to unravel in the 1920s and 1930s; by 1940, Longwood's population had shrunk to just 100 people. In 1945, during World War II, Longwood played an important role in helping supply military forces with food and other supplies needed for Operation Crossroads. After the war ended, long-term decline set in as many people left town for jobs elsewhere. By 2000, only 10 percent of locals still lived within walking distance of their homes; by 2010 this number shrank further to 5 percent.
