They named their settlement Fort Myers Beach because they thought that Fort Myers would become an American outpost guarding the mouth of the St Lucie River against piracy from Cuba. The English colony failed and Fort Myers Beach vanished by 1840 when Redonda Creek flooded and moved its water table inland. The first white people to live in Longwood were indentured servants brought over by Captain John Smith during his voyages through Southeast Florida as part of his exploration for new land grants in 1775-76. These early white residents included several families who owned rice plantations along Siesta Key near present-day Northwest Field Road and had to leave when prices for rice rose too high during the Revolution (the price of rice increased 400% from 1700 to 1800). Piney Woods Church was built circa 1830 across from present day NW Field Road where services are still offered today on Sundays morning beginning at 9:00am . There were also Methodist services held here until about 1840 when most churches relocated to Ft Myers Beach due to growing competition from Baptist congregations there). By 1845 all but one church had closed down or been taken over by Baptists – Piney Woods Church remained operational until 1903 when it burned down with all its occupants inside! Today only two remains remaining of this once populous congregation - both dating back to before 1830 – Piney Woods Chapel & Watchtower House (both are on private property) . These humble buildings remain standing testament not only to longWOOD’s religious history but also its unique architecture which has drawn many visitors over these past century(s) ..... From earliest days longWOOD functioned as an agricultural center with slaves working both homeschooling children (& adults) up through college level learning while their parents labored in fields nearby; crops such as corn, beans, cotton, sugar cane etc grown year round; items like hats/caps/sunglasses/ aprons made from cloth or leather/ felt glued onto poles then sewn together using thread? Noteworthy was also “gourd painting” which involved taking fresh gourds filled with paint then boiling them until soft so that vibrant colors could be applied directly onto skin….. This type of activity took place almost daily outside throughout much OF our later years ..... This rich cultural heritage continues today thru traditional music performances usually staged at Community Center auditorium each month culminating in a parade around downtown followed by Independence Day fireworks………. Today many folks enjoy visiting this charming community every day while living close enough so they can experience some aspects firsthand!

On December 14, 1860,[1] Jacksonvilleitis (a severe case of yellow fever) caused almost all of the men working on Jephson Brothers' farm to go into quarantine due to fears that it might spread through contact with humans or animals infected with the virus.[2][3] Consequently only two families lived in Longwood: those owned by John Heisman and Jephson brothers themselves;[4] and some freed slaves led by their white master General Houston until they were finally emancipated in 1865.[5][6] With its isolationISTate – unlike most other Seminole communities – Fort Johnson (later renamed Fort Brooke), which guarded Tampa Bay against pirates,[7] became an important military base for the region during its early years as a Spanish colony;[8][9][10] as well as providing support for scouting operations against Seminoles in this part of Florida during both World War I and II. In addition to being home to one of Flagler County’s few businesses—the Hobe Sound Refrigerator plant—and one of its few schools—Longwood also boasted one of Floridas earliest newspapers: The Herald [11], established on February 9, 1902 by Wm.
