In 1897, Welch donated land to build an elementary school in honor of his late wife Lucille Fenton Welch (1860-1941). In addition to providing schools for local children, this gift also provided land for a larger public park that still exists today. In 1907, shortly after becoming president of Panhandle County (then part of Jacksonville), Jepson Daniel Hodge purchased some additional property east of Longwood on White Sands Road. This new purchase included what is now known as Hodge Park. It wasn’t until 1916 that Hodge began to develop his properties further into what would become Longwood Township . As time passed and more people moved into origrated to Longwood from other parts of Florida and Georgia , it became apparent that the smaller townsfolk could not keep up with changes happening outside their own jurisdictions. In 1924, Mayor Waddell ordered all township buildings be torn down so that new construction could begin on what would eventually become Highway 95A (now US-27). The Great Depression had a significant impact on Longwood during those years; several businesses closed their doors and many residents lost their jobs . However, despite these difficulties , many locals banded together to help one another during times of need . Throughout 1933-1935 , for example , members from various households pooled money together to buy food items like gasoline fuel and soap for soldiers stationed at Camp Butler near Panama City Beach .
